Area 1 Lodges

Baildon Moor
Assistant Provincial Grand Master: Michael Dyson

Area 1 consists of 29 Lodges in Haworth (1), Keighley (1), Bingley (2), Baildon (11), Bradford (5), Dewsbury (2), Mirfield (3), Cleckheaton (1), Heckmondwike (3).

Most Lodges meet in dedicated masonic halls such as Hoyle Court, Baildon but four meet at the Midland Hotel in Bradford and one at Bradford Grammar School.

The majority of the Lodges are over 100 years old, including four which are over 200 years in age. The oldest Lodge – the Lodge of the Three Grand Principles No 208, Dewsbury – was formed in Holborn in 1772 before moving to Dewsbury in 1804 and the newest – Bradfordians Lodge No 9886, Bradford – was formed in 2013 for members associated with Bradford Grammar School. Three Lodges are ‘lunar’, meeting on or near the night of the full moon each month and one is ‘daylight’, meeting at lunchtime.

There is correspondence regarding a meeting of the Grand Lodge of All England in Bradford in 1713, travelling from York. It is recorded that “18 Gentlemen of the families of that neighbourhood were made Masons at that Lodge” and it is presumed that those brethren held masonic meetings in the Bradford area from that date. The Lodge of Hope No 302 is the oldest Lodge in Bradford (1794) and has close links with Bradford University as a member of UGLE’s Universities Scheme.

The Lodges are covered by 24 Liaison Officers. The Mentor Area Co-ordinator has 5 Assistant MACs: 2 at Hoyle Court, one at the Midland Hotel, 1 for Bingley, Keighley & Haworth and 1 for the Heavy Woollen District (Dewsbury, Mirfield, Cleckheaton & Heckmondwike). Lodges are members in 3 Installed Masters’ Associations depending on location: Keighley & Craven IMA; Airedale, Wharfedale & Bradford IMA and Dewsbury & Spen Valley District IMA.
