Zetland Lodge No. 1311 were delighted to present a cheque for £2500 to The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association at their Headingley Training Centre (June 5th). In recognition of their donation the Lodge will be allowed to name a guide dog puppy, and they have chosen ‘Zetland’. In the future and subject to passing the training programme, ‘Zetland’ will be able to change the life of an unsighted person for many years to come.
It was particularly pleasing to meet Lindsey Moore and her guide dog Charlotte. Our WM, Simon Penny-Smith knew Lindsey in his younger days, even before she was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that caused severe visual impairment, and he had kept in touch with her.
Lindsey said “Since getting my guide dog Charlotte I am able to do so many things that I couldn’t even contemplate before, like snowboarding and horse riding. Losing your sight can be devastating but it doesn’t have to be. I was determined that my sight loss would not stop me from doing all the things I ever wanted to do, and now with Charlotte at my side I am able to live independently and normally just as I did when I was sighted”.
