21 April 1939 - 6 April 2020

Initiated into Pengestone Lodge No 6933 15 May 1985 and Worshipful Master in 2002.

Following National Service, David entered the Steel Industry at Stocksbridge Works where a number of Pengestone Lodge members were employed, leading to his Masonic interests.
At that time, the Lodge membership was very high, and a 17-year path to the Chair was not uncommon while fulfilling the progressive Officers pathway.

David became Secretary of the Lodge in 2009 and was later promoted to Past Junior Warden in Provincial Grand Lodge, subsequently becoming Liaison Officer and Honorary Member of Friendly Lodge No 1513.

David had a wry sense of humour and could use this to bring smiles to the faces of his Masonic colleagues, and for this, he will be particularly remembered.

Together with his wife Margaret, he made a great contribution to the running of the Lodge and its variety of Social activities In recent years both Margaret and David had health problems, necessitating Margaret's admission to a Barnsley Care Home. Sadly, Margaret died on 20 March, her funeral taking place on 3 April. In a strange twist of fate, David was called to the Grand Lodge above only 3 days later.

In Pengestone Lodge, the "ladder" to the chair involved several years as Steward culminating in the office of Chief Steward. This involved stocking the bar, collecting dining fees and preparing the Bar accounts for the year - all in all a demanding job. I worked with David when he was Chief Steward or "Cock Steward" as it was known in the Lodge at that time, and his experience was still in use when he was Secretary in managing bar related business. He was an excellent ritualist, and was forthright in his views where he thought improvements were required. Together with Margaret, they put much effort into the social side of the Lodge. Pengestone's Ladies Social Section arranged 5 events each year which were enjoyed by Pengestone members and visitors together with their ladies..Well done and thanks David and Margaret - RIP
