NEWS FROM THE PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER Hello Brethren, We really must start with the serious matter of Coronavirus. As social beings, we look forward to enjoying the company of our Brethren and therein lies the challenge! You will have seen that in conjunction with the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, I have issued guidance to Lodges and Brethren in an attempt to prevent the possible transmission of the virus at Meetings. My great concern is that the deaths in China and other countries resulting from contracting this virus appear to be among the aged and infirm population. We have many Brethren of advanced years and their health and well-being is my great concern as well as all my Brethren and their Families and Friends. It is known that this virus does not discriminate on grounds of age alone and everyone appears to be vulnerable. I repeat the advice given by Her Majesty’s Government for all of us to wash our hands frequently and to use and dispose of tissues when coughing or sneezing to help prevent the transmission of the virus. I implore any Brother not to attend Meetings should they feel unwell with “flu-like” symptoms especially if they have recently visited an area of the world where the virus is prevalent. You will of course be missed. However, the choice of self-quarantine is the greater service to Brethren and fellow creatures. Please do keep Almoners informed of any illness as assistance may be needed. Now on to happier things! I had the pleasure of undertaking the duties of Consecrating Officer for Garforth Lodge No: 9987 at the start of the month. This special event does not happen very often and the Consecration Team worked with skill and ability to bring this new Lodge into existence in accordance with ancient usage. Indeed! A splendid day was had by all and I record my thanks to the Founders and especially the Organisers for making the event memorable for all the right reasons. Welcome to the newest member of our Provincial Family of Lodges. It is pleasing to note that a number of Candidates have already been proposed and it looks like very busy times ahead for the new Lodge. May I take this opportunity to confirm that I am always prepared to consider an application for a new Lodge if the evidence from the potential Petitioners can be produced to demonstrate both initial and ongoing viability and sustainability. A New Assistant Provincial Grand Master Installed! An excellent evening was enjoyed by everyone at West Vale when I installed W Bro. Robert Cole, PAGReg, as Assistant Provincial Grand Master. A packed Temple and Festive Board resounded with the sound of the Brethren having a wonderful time - And it was a splendid occasion! INCREASING MEMBERSHIP – Attraction, Recruitment, Retention and Retrieval Members’ Pathway - A Proven Winner! Results from the effective application of the Members’ Pathway continue to impress with increased memberships in individual Lodges. Alas, this is far from universal across the Province. 2019 was not just a “one-off” with the Members’ Pathway and I urge every Lodge to adopt and implement activities to increase membership starting with an annual programme of Open Days. My thanks to our Provincial, Area and Lodge Membership Officers for their hard work and commitment. Remember! We are all Membership Officers and I repeat my 2019 comment that I do believe that an average of three Candidates for every Lodge is attainable. The final 2019 membership figures are being verified. However, it does appear that we enjoyed an increase in Initiates and that is good news. We also lost Brethren through death and resignation. We can do nothing about when the Great Architect calls Brethren to higher service. We can and must do something about resignations, hence the information sent to Lodges to be proactive when a resignation is received. I invite Lodges to look through their records and make contact with former members in an attempt to bring them back into the fold. I was shocked when I was made aware that we have over 1000 “unattached” Brethren in our Province. We sowed excellent seeds in 2019 and I predict that we shall reap the real rewards throughout 2020 and beyond. RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE – Making a difference in our Communities Floods! Yes, it happened again – Last year it was South Yorkshire - This time it’s the Calder Valley (again!). You will have seen my special “Floods Page” on our Provincial Website? Once again Freemasonry leapt to the assistance of those in distress by making Community donations currently standing at £10,000. Money helps but also a kindly action to show others that we care does as much good. My position remains firm – In any natural disaster in this Province my first concern is for Brethren, families and dependants: None to be without a roof over their head or to be cold or to be hungry. Our concern extends also to the wider Community and we shall do whatever we can to assist. The Freemasons of the West Riding - Working with the Lord Lieutenants - We have three Lieutenancies within the boundaries of our Province and we are in the process of establishing a programme of allocating dedicated funds to support communities in addition to the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund. Important to Note! This is a new Community initiative with dedicated funding and will not impact on the operation or budget of the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund. To kick things off - Great things are coming to fruition in the South of the Province. The hard work of my Deputy and the Chairman of West Riding Masonic Charities means that “something new” will be launched on the 1st of April. WATCH THIS SPACE for the detail. Following the introduction in South Yorkshire, we shall extend the new scheme to the other Lieutenancies in the Province. We need to ensure that the agreed processes work effectively before going Province-wide. The Provincial Grand Master’s Fund/West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd – 2020 Awards Evening - This will be the first such annual event to be held in October this year. Brethren, Families, Friends and the recipients of grants will be brought together for an evening of celebration. Look out for the publicity Brethren! This will be an opportunity to see where our donations are applied to make a difference, in some cases a big difference, in our Communities. ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES – Making it even more worthwhile Initiates’ Evenings - The roll out programme has started and the success continues. Once again it has been a delightful opportunity for the Rulers to meet our new members and their families around the Province. The feedback has been extremely positive and I am most grateful to the Company of Stewards for undertaking the planning. The Brethren involved in the delivery of the Ancient Change – a high spot of the evening - to the gatherings have all been a credit to themselves, their Lodges, to me, to our Province and to Freemasonry – well done to all – a great Team effort! I can confirm that it will be “same again” in 2021. Twinning with the Inspectorates of both Malta and of Portugal - Continued thanks to the Company of Stewards for driving this initiative. It is planned to have a special “black tie” dinner on the 6th of May in Harrogate for Brethren and Ladies to celebrate the occasion. Illuminated scrolls with be signed and exchanged following which, a programme of inter-visitation and social activities will be published. Masonry Universal in action! Provincial Grand Lodge Meeting - Harrogate 2020 - Things will be different as promised and with more information being distributed. The Annual Meeting will be a “member- focused” experience to transact the essential business of the Province and especially to celebrate with the Brethren who will be receiving an Appointment or Promotion in Provincial Grand Lodge. Looking Ahead to March:
Monthly thought to inspire: “You can have anything you want, if you want it badly enough” Abraham Lincoln My Fraternal Greetings and Regards to you and all your loved ones! May the Great Architect of the Universe bless and protect us all. David RW Bro. David S. Pratt – Provincial Grand Master “2020 Will Be Better Than Ever!” “2019 – Was Great – 2020 Will Be Even Better!” NEWS FROM THE PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER Happy New Year . . . 2020 – What a year it will be! The Christmas Festivities feel long gone and I have already heard the comment: “Isn’t the year going quickly!” So, let’s get on with things with a plan so that in January 2021 we can look back on a year of achievement, satisfaction and pride. My January message is short and sweet emphasising and reiterating the three key Provincial Objectives to ensure that Freemasonry thrives in our magnificent Province: INCREASING MEMBERSHIP RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES Some observations and plans: INCREASING MEMBERSHIP - 2019 was largely satisfactory as we appear to have stabilised the decline. Tremendous growth to be applauded in some of our Lodges. This will be confirmed when the final statistics are available from Lodge Returns. I look forward to us all reaping the harvest of further increased memberships in 2020 following the solid word undertaken in 2019. I urge every Lodge and every Brother to embrace the excellent and effective suggestions in the Members’ Pathway. If Lodges and Masonic Centres work together for the general benefit of all then we will all succeed. Candidates and growth? It must always be a case of Quality as well as Quantity! Welcome to a New Lodge! Garforth Lodge No. 9987 will be Consecrated on Monday, 10th of February 2020 at Castle Grove Masonic Hall, Leeds. Welcome to the Family of the Province! Remember – As in every walk of Life – Enterprises come and go. I will always consider requests for new Lodges if there is a sound business plan. Show me the route to success and I will sign the Petition. RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE – The increased activities within Civic Society during 2019 will continue and grow in 2020. Watch this space for the details of the “Lord Lieutenants’ Support Fund” – Exciting things will happen! ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES – I am listening! Increased communication, consultation and evaluation will continue to be a feature in 2020. My personal objective is to assist with the provision of suitable activities for each and every Brother to maximise their personal enjoyment. Not everything is compulsory! Some things to consider: . Initiates’ Evenings . Masonic Light and Education (Including Solomon) . Our Provincial Education Programme . New “Member- Focused” Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge . The Celebrated “Provincial Quiz” . Linking with Inspectorates Overseas . Etc. etc. etc., etc., etc. Interested in getting involved with Provincial activities? Make it known to your Lodge Liaison Officer. No guarantees but I will see what can be done to enhance your Masonic experience. A thought to inspire as we look to the continuing year ahead: “If you don’t try – How would you know that it’s not possible? LATEST NEWS UPDATE for 2019 The end of another year is fast approaching and the nights are getting very cold. Traditions across many cultures include festivities to feast and to look forward to the New Year with lighter and warmer days to generate growth. So it will be for Freemasonry and our Province in 2020 through energy and focus to celebrate and to grow our wonderful Order. A New Arrival - Our colleague in the Provincial Office, Connie Greenwood, has given birth to a baby boy, Jack, 9lb 8oz. and we are told that both are doing well. A hearty welcome to the new arrival and very best wishes to Connie, Jack and family. Ruler Change - As advised to all Lodges, W Bro. Alan Elstone, PJGD, has resigned from the Office of Assistant Provincial Grand Master. W Bro. Elstone has certainly not enjoyed the best of health recently and circumstances have led to me accepting his resignation. My thanks to W Bro. Elstone for all his efforts and the valuable contribution made to our Province. I have been pleased to appoint W Bro. Robert Cole, PAGReg, PPSGW to succeed as Assistant Provincial Grand Master. The Installation ceremony, as advised, will take place on Wednesday the 19th of February 2020 at a meeting of Mexborough Lodge No: 6117 at the Masonic Hall, Willow Royd, West Vale, Halifax. INCREASING MEMBERSHIP - It really is all about: Attraction, Retention and Retrieval Members’ Pathway - It works! We must consider ourselves very fortunate in that when we became Freemasons, we joined a Lodge that has been established and grown with love and care by previous generations. Our temporary custodianship of a Lodge means that we all have a responsibility regarding the future. It is such a pleasure to see some Lodges thrive and for new Lodges to be Consecrated. Equally, there is no shame when members decide that their Lodge has served its useful purpose and the time has come to return the Warrant. Ultimately, it is all a matter of choice and then action. The Provincial Membership Team stands ready to support any Lodge who wishes to grow by attracting, retaining and retrieving members. Reconfirming my absolute requirement – Candidates must be of the appropriate calibre to add lustre and dignity to our ancient Institution comprising men of integrity and who live their lives by the noble principles of Freemasonry. “by refraining from recommending anyone to a participation of our secrets unless you have strong grounds to believe that by a similar fidelity he will ultimately reflect honour on your choice”. RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE - Looking to Make a Difference! Remembrance Day Events - Our Gratitude to those who fell on the field of battle .– A sacrifice never to be forgotten and a “tie” of respect and gratitude that binds us all together: In my travels I have seen our special tie being worn with a quiet, discreet and dignified distinction. My thanks to all who have purchased a tie. The sale of ties has again resulted in a donation to the Royal British Legion. It will be the same again please in 2020. Ties will be made available for sale mid-way in the year. Sikh War Memorial, Greenhead Park, Huddersfield Sikh War Memorial - A Tribute to the Fallen: I was pleased and proud that our Masonic family was suitably represented at the unveiling of a stunning £65,000 bronze statue of a Sikh soldier to commemorate the thousands of Sikhs who fought and died in two World Wars. The ceremony, conducted by Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Ed Anderson in Huddersfield’s Greenhead Park, celebrated almost a decade of planning and fund-raising by Sikh organisations, the Army, Royal British Legion, Kirklees Council and public support. The Provincial Grand Master’s Fund made a donation and one of the day’s organisers was Bro. Jaswant Singh Chata, of Mexborough Lodge No: 6117. W Bro. Manjit Singh, of Salarden Lodge No: 3971 took part in a wreath-laying ceremony. Mirfield Mayor; Cllr. W Bro. Martyn Bolt, W Bro. John Gledhill, PSGD, PAsstProvGM and his wife Sylvia and W Bro. Ken Davy of Concord Lodge No: 4126, were among invited guests who braved the bitterly cold weather for a hugely heart-warming ceremony watched by several hundred people. Those Floods! My thanks to all who have contributed both money and also man-power to assist our Brethren and other fellow creatures in distress in South Yorkshire. We have made a difference and have shown that if we can help - we will! West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd/Provincial Grand Master’s Fund - The final 2019 list of small grants makes for splendid reading! The generosity of Freemasons is a powerful example of our principles in action in our Communities. Harrogate Mayor’s Visit to Spa Lodge - This looks like becoming a well-established event. Well Done! I do encourage all Lodges to think about inviting local Civic Leaders to visit Masonic Halls and Lodges. It is a great opportunity to entertain, educate and to demonstrate support for our communities. I will add that the same applies for any other significant groups in communities such as Religious Leaders, Youth Organisations, Historical Societies, Social Clubs, Professional Organisations, etc., etc., etc. ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES - A Treasure Chest of Gifts! Grand Lodge Quarterly Communication - Another splendid day in London in a packed Grand Temple with many overseas visitors from our own and other Constitutions. A very colourful occasion seeing different, in some cases very different, regalia from all parts of the Globe! Do please see the UGLE Website to read the words of our Pro Grand Master: https://www.freemasonrytoday.com/ugle-sgc/ugle/speeches/pro-grand-master-s-address-december-2019 Not visited Freemasons’ Hall in London? My recommendation is to go and take your family. The organised tours are a delight and a visit to the Grand Lodge Museum makes for a memorable and great experience. Education for Freemasons - If the activities of the Festive Season become overwhelming Why not dip into “Solomon” for some relaxation? The “Nuggets” are there to be enjoyed and the list keeps on growing! Looking Ahead: 2020 looks like being really busy with Centenary Celebrations, a Bicentenary Celebration, Initiates’ Evenings, the Consecration of a new Lodge etc. These are significant or new activities. However, the most important thing is to not only enjoy ourselves but to keep practising the principles and traditions of Freemasonry in our own Lodges. Lodges and members are the power houses and engines of Freemasonry. Think about the future, respect the past and keep evolving to ensure that we grow to hand over to future generations! We are only limited by our own imaginations and sometimes shackled by non-existent chains. A New Year Resolution? Strive to improve anything that we touch in our lives! A Thought to Close the Year for New Year’s Eve (2020 is a Leap Year!): “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 366 page book. Write a good one”. Brad Paisley My Fraternal and Festive Greetings and Regards to you and all your loved ones! May the Great Architect of the Universe bless and protect us. David RW Bro. David S. Pratt - Provincial Grand Master “2019 Was Great. 2020 Will Be Even Better! ![]()
NEWS FROM THE PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER I must start by mentioning the terrible floods that have hit the South of our Province. Our thoughts are with all affected as we approach Christmas. I am not going to repeat my appeal and comments as shown on the Provincial Website other than to applaud the £60,000+ that Freemasons have donated from all over England to relieve the distress caused by the flooding. “Worthy Masons All!” I am pleased that in addition to the monies donated, we are helping Communities with Manpower support in clean-up operations. Rotherham Golf Club - A New Masonic Meeting Place. What a revelation! It was a pleasure to chair an informal meeting to declare the facility open for Masonic meetings. As I drove up the long drive and approached the building I was impressed. The interior was also very impressive. Yes! I said to myself – this is the impact that we wish to make in our Communities and with candidates and with their friends and families. My congratulations to all who have negotiated the move from the former Rotherham Masonic Hall in the centre of the town. This is a case study for many to emulate and augers well for the future of Freemasonry in Rotherham. Why not go and see for yourself? Yorkshire Air Ambulance - Our Annual visit to see the helicopter at the Nostell Priory base was very enjoyable. West Riding Masonic Charities Limited (WRMCL) match-funded the donation from the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF). The YAA work continues to impress and amaze. The provision of the £20,000 night vision goggles by WRMCL has already enabled YAA to save additional lives. Remembrance Day - I have been pleased to read the reports of Masonic participation at many events throughout the Province and long may this continue, please. The Leeds Parade that I attended was conducted with quiet distinction. Our participation was well received and culminated in the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph. Thought for 2020 - I would like to see a greater number of Members joining me in the Parade and Service of Remembrance at Leeds. My thanks to all who have purchased the distinctive Masonic tie. This enables us to make a donation to the Royal British Legion. Radio Leeds - Well done to W Bro. Cannon Keith Madeley, PJGD, who delivered a splendid message in his interview. Ever the consummate professional and a superb ambassador for Freemasonry. The interview centred on the Centenary of the Lodge of Peace No: 3988, Baildon. It was a pleasure to attend the Centenary Meeting in a packed Temple. Shakespeare and Equity Lodge No: 1018, Baildon - I received the Lodge Warrants and Certificate of Amalgamation at the final meeting of the Lodge. Nothing lasts for ever and the combined histories of both Lodges indicate the significance of the impact made in the City of Bradford. A proud and distinguished history that will not be forgotten. I was very pleased to learn that the Members have joined Acacia Lodge No: 2321, Baildon and I wish them every happiness in their new Lodge. Provincial Grand Chapter - What a lovely day at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford. My thanks to the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, his Co-Principals and all the Companions for the courtesies extended and the warmth of the welcome. The traditional “Token of the Indissoluble Link” was returned into my safe keeping for the next six months. Installation Meeting of Linton Lodge No: 9444, Harrogate - A soon as I have finished this Blog, I shall be on my way to Harrogate to attend Linton lodge Now it’s time to look at the recipe for success – The Three Provincial Objectives INCREASING MEMBERSHIP – Attraction, Retention and Retrieval The good news keeps coming in. The Membership Pathway - A Gift to All! I continue to urge every Lodge and every Brother to play their part. Very encouraging reports from the Castle Grove Masonic hall, Leeds Open Day with a joint event held by Lodges that meet in the building. This emphasises and supports the absolute essential – “The Right Man for the Right Lodge”. Yes, I continue to look to increase our Membership but only with men of the right character and calibre. ££££££ - Provincial Funds and resources are available for Lodges and Masonic meeting establishments who wish to hold Open Days or similar Events. RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE - Be There and Be Involved! Flood Support, Open Days, Media Coverage, Remembrance Day Events, Grants from the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund, etc., etc., etc. Please keep up the great work Brethren. ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES White Rose Magazine - Autumn 2019 Edition Another magnificent edition of a publication that is enjoyed and highly respected all over the Masonic World. Well done to W Bro. Peter Doherty, PPSGW, and Team – A real credit to the Province! Can you help? I know that W Bro. Peter would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to become involved. Linking with the Inspectorates of Malta and also of Portugal The final arrangements are now being prepared. I shall look forward to taking Rita to the Algarve and to Malta. Initiates’ Evenings – 2020 My thanks to all concerned. The schedule is now published. Please do try to attend to support your 2019 Initiates and their families. Incorporated into the schedule is the Annual Especial Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge to be held at Castle Grove Masonic Hall, Leeds where I shall invest certain Brethren with the rank of Past Provincial Grand Steward. These Brethren automatically become members for three years of the acclaimed “Provincial Company of Stewards”. I am very pleased with the progress of “The Company” and their involvement in a number of important development projects and activities. A Thought to end from Brother Winston Churchill: “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often” My Fraternal Greetings and Regards to you and yours! David RW Bro. David S. Pratt - Provincial Grand Master ![]()
NEWS FROM THE PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER
In a brief respite from all the rain, I ventured forth in the sunshine yesterday to cut the grass! It had to be done and could not be left any longer. Cutting wet and heavy grass is no fun but certainly helped me to burn off some calories. I can report that my planned weight loss continues and I do thank the Brethren who have suggested that this could be sponsored for Charity. I am still looking for that 73kgs man inside me! (According to my GP, that’s what it says in “The Book”!). Masonic October? A strange for month for me with far more “behind the scenes” activities than events in regalia and meetings. Still if you fail to plan then........ (You know the rest Brethren!) Let me start by thanking WBro. Ronald Crabtree, PAGDC, who has tendered his resignation from the Office of Provincial Grand Almoner. My thanks to you WBro. Ronald for your hard work and efforts. Now it’s time for you to enjoy life with your extended family. I attended the Provincial and District Grand Masters’ Rulers’ Forum at Freemasons’ Hall in London. The items on the agenda on the future of Freemasonry were stimulating and provoked vigorous and impassioned debate. The wind of change continues to blow through Grand Lodge and we can expect even more direction and support from London to ensure that Freemasonry continues to survive and thrive. Key message: the past was interesting but we cannot live there. My thanks to the Past Provincial Rulers who joined me at a meeting at Castle Grove Masonic Hall to be briefed on the successes of Province during 2019 and plans for 2020. New Temporary Staff Member. A big welcome to Charlotte Waythe who has joined the Team in the Provincial Office to provide Maternity Cover. My thanks to the Lodge of Harmony No: 275, Huddersfield for inviting me and my wife to attend their Ladies Luncheon. We were graced with the presence of the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Mumtaz Hussain and the Lady Mayoress. INCREASING MEMBERSHP – Attraction, Retention and Retrieval More great news from Lodges who are adopting the Members’ Pathway. Attraction? I was very pleased to hear that Ripon Lodges have four Candidates and this is happening all over the Province. Do please remember Brethren, it is quality as well as quantity that matters. Our hard-working Membership Team stand ready to assist any Lodge. Following a number of requests, I have asked our Provincial Grand Secretary to publish some suggested questions for use during Candidate Interviews to supplement those shown in the Members’ Pathway. Please note - these will be recommendations and Lodges may well have a bank of their own questions to assess the suitability of Candidates. A personal request to Interviewers from me please. We have all heard the words from the Preliminary Declaration in the Book of Constitutions concerning the indissoluble link with Royal Arch Masonry. Please would you make reference to the Royal Arch as part of the selection process? I do believe that an explanation of the complete journey in Freemasonry should be included at the earliest stage. On the theme of “Quality as well as Quantity” - I would also like to take this opportunity to confirm that Candidates who have come via the Internet are not on any “fast track”. Proposers and Seconders must be fully satisfied regarding the suitability of the prospective Candidate. I do expect that all Candidates receive a home visit so that the views of the spouse/partner can also be assessed. Retention? We are still losing Brethren after a short period of membership. This is puzzling. I am curious to know why this happens. There is some evidence that Candidates who have been fully prepared are more likely to retain membership. This leads me on to Retrieval. . . Retrieval? We appear to have a few hundred “Unattached” Brethren on the books of the Province. These are Brothers who have resigned and no longer belong to a Lodge. I have asked our Provincial Grand Secretary to research this and to establish that most delicate matter of whether the Brother is still alive. When we have the details, we shall be asking Lodges to make contact with our Brethren who are currently “lost” but must not be forgotten. We also have a number of Brethren who pay subscriptions but do not attend their Lodges. Again, I do ask Lodges, especially our already hard-working Almoner, to make contact to show that we do care. All the evidence shows that if a Brother starts not to attend and no- one makes contact then they just fade away and resign. I often use the phrase – We are a Fraternal Organisation! We do need to care about our absent Brethren and must do everything possible to bring them back into the fold. RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE - Be There and Be Involved! Charity matters - My continued thanks to my Brethren and families for such generosity. I am deeply conscious that it is “family money”. Yorkshire Air Ambulance Award! We received a special recognition award at the Annual YAA Dinner held at the Oulton Hall Hotel. The Certificate is now in the Provincial Office. Once again. My thanks to West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd who provided me with a cheque for £4000 to present to the Mayor of Kirklees in support of his Charities of the year – The Samaritans and Diabetes UK. Really Big News to be Announced Soon! We have been working with the Lord Lieutenant and his Team in South Yorkshire on a Community initiative. Watch this space! Remembrance Ties – The additional ties bought for sale this year have nearly all gone! That is magnificent Brethren! You have my permission to wear the tie during the month of November as a fitting and discreet tribute to Freemasons and others who have fallen during times of conflict serving King/Queen and Country. “For our tomorrow they gave their today”. Remembrance Day - I do encourage Brethren to support their local events. I am aware of Brethren who prefer to participate privately in silent memory and tribute. There is my standing Dispensation for regalia to be worn in public and the weather on the day and local traditions should determine what, if any should be worn - Full regalia, collars and jewels only or even none at all if raining. ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT MATTERS! Yes it really does matter Brethren. Potential Candidates want to know more before committing to membership and Members of all ages are curious to know more. I encourage all to make use of our Provincial “Masonic Light” Programme and also the Solomon Learning Platform. The new Modules on Solomon are terrific and the “Professional Voice Over” versions of some of the key Modules are about to be released. 2019 Initiates’ Evenings - All have now been booked for February and March 2020. I do encourage Lodge members and their families to attend to support their new Brethren. NOVEMBER – The end of 2019 is in sight! A great month ahead!
"Those who resist being part of the solution could be part of the problem” “Who wants to be anything other than part of the solution?” - After Eldridge Cleaver My continued very best wishes to you and yours David Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master NEWS FROM THE PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER
My thanks to all who have enquired after my health. Yes! I am losing weight - it's under Doctor's orders. I do need to lose a lot of weight. I'm not yet sure that there is a 73kg man inside me trying to get out; however, that's what it says I should be in the book! The last time I was anywhere near this target was when I was a teenager! Watch this space as I watch the scales. . . Unconnected with this weight loss is a strange virus that has knocked me sideways. I feel just fine after a long wakeup phase and then good as the day progresses. I do get tired as the evening advances but I am pleased to report that I am definitely getting better. Viruses! September has been a splendid Masonic month with everyone getting into the saddle for another wonderful year ahead. This is our moment in history to savour as Freemasonry evolves to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. We will be ready! TEAM VISITS AND CENTENARIES, ETC. A series of wonderful evenings at Fidelity Lodge No; 289, Leeds and also Alfred Lodge No: 306, Otley with the 2019/2020 Team of Acting Provincial Officers. Then! A great cause for celebration at the Centenary Meeting of Victory Lodge No: 3922, Hipperholme. The Installation Meeting of Harewood Lodge No: 5667, Otley was a superb occasion enjoyed by all! THE PRESTONIAN LECTURE - An Official Presentation at Leeds What an honour for the Leeds and District Lodge of Installed Masters No: 7918, Leeds to be one of the very, very few Lodges to be selected receive the Prestonian Lecture for 2019. Yet another incredible and historic night for the Province. We were treated to a fascinating lecture on "Freemasonry and the Great War". INCREASING MEMBERSHIP (1) - Focusing on Candidates - They are “Out There”! The Members' Pathway continues to reap rewards for Lodges that are implementing all or even only some of the recommended approaches and activities. My thanks to Lodge Membership Officers and to the Area Teams for all their hard work. Candidates are the lifeblood of any Lodge and they are out there in our Communities. INCREASING MEMBERSHIP (2) – Retrieval - Lost but: Where Are They Now? Why do we lose so many members so soon after joining our Lodges and soon after the Chair? Not just our Province but everywhere! The records show that there are hundreds of former members now designated "unattached" in our Province having resigned from their Lodges. Where are they? I ask every Lodge Secretary to look at their own records to identify Brethren who have resigned and then to make every attempt to bring them back into the fold. We are a Fraternal Order and this is a golden opportunity to demonstrate those characteristics that we all profess to admire GARFORTH LODGE - Approved! A new Lodge in the Province. This is great news! There is always room for new Lodges if the business case is strong. The Consecration is scheduled for February 2020. RAISING OUR CIVIC PROFILE - Be There and Be Involved! Charity matters - My continued thanks to my Brethren and families for such generosity. The Provincial Grand Master's Fund through West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. has again made a number of quarterly minor grants and this means that a number of worthy causes in our Communities will benefit. Each satisfies the essential criterion of a grant award of “making a difference” Yorkshire Air Ambulance will again be receiving an annual combined grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation and WRMCL. Brethren, please continue to look wide for worthy causes to support and think about the 2020 “Major Grants” for Projects that will make a significant difference in our Communities. ENHANCING MEMBER EXPERIENCES PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE MEETING - Harrogate - May 2020 This is coming together beautifully. It will be a great "Member Experience"! Please do spread the word. EDUCATION “NUGGETS” –- Enjoyable Masonic Learning for Everyone I am so pleased to hear that some Lodges are using Nuggets at Meetings. Nuggets are only one aspect of the Solomon Learning & Development System. There are also many other excellent in-depth Modules to be enjoyed. Watch out for the new Voice modules. ALMONER'S & CHARITY STEWARD'S REPORTS It is really pleasing to note an increasing number of Lodges circulating these important reports to all Members in advance. Not only does this save time at the Lodge Meeting but it keeps all Members aware of Private Lodge business - especially those who cannot attend. I commend this approach to every Lodge for consideration. OCTOBER BECKONS - The Year moves on apace!
I also have a meeting with the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire. Nothing more can be said at the moment other than "Watch this Space"! A THOUGHT TO FINISH...... "Don't be afraid to give up the good and go for the great!" J. D. Rockefeller My very best wishes to you and yours David Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master Very Warm Fraternal Greetings from the Provincial Grand Master! August - Indeed a Month for Relaxation and Planning (But Mostly Planning!) Temperature in the 30s! The sun is shining - however, there’s still much work to be done (in addition to the garden!) Although a number of Lodges meet during this traditional holiday month, the vast majority of Freemasonry has experienced a quiet phase of the year apart from Provincial Grand Masters and their Teams! Many things are happening, however, and everything needs careful planning. Travelling to London to attend essential Project meetings at Grand Lodge during the heatwave has been “interesting!” I am not a lover of great heat – that’s one of the reasons why Madeira is a favourite haunt with its cooling sea breezes. Congratulations! Connie Greenwood, one of our valuable support staff members in the Provincial Office, will be going on maternity leave. Many congratulations on your second baby Connie! Connie’s duties will be covered by a temporary staff member ensuring that we have a full complement in Provincial Office. Increasing Membership - Survive to Thrive! The Members’ Pathway - Growth Continuing! A really good first half of the year! Now let’s continue with growth for the rest of this year and beyond. I was delighted to read the reports from the Grand Officer Forums held in each Area confirming the general positive view that: “There are plenty of the “right” potential candidates out there and we need to go and find them! New Lodge at Garforth We await the formal approval from Grand Lodge – Fingers still crossed with optimism! Planning – Consecration on Monday, 10th of February 2020 at Castle Grove, Leeds. Lodges Returning Warrants It might seem strange to include this in the “Increasing Membership” section? A number of Lodges have indeed come to the end of their natural existence but it is so pleasing to see that the vast majority of the members of those Lodges become Joining members elsewhere. The effect is that we do not see our membership decrease and the receiving Lodges become stronger with the introduction of both new members and also added experience. New members and experience! What a wonderful combination! Raising our Civic Profile - “Be There - Be Seen!” Charity Matters Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) I am delighted to hear that the new Vice Chancellor of Bradford University will be dining with the Lodge of Hope No: 302, Bradford - One of the four University Scheme Lodges in our Province. There is an established tradition of Freemasonry supporting research at the University and long may that continue! I have in my diary the next meeting of the PGM’s Fund Committee on the 10th September when the Committee will consider a great number of requests for local support. Small or larger grants – they all make such a difference in our Communities. My usual plea - Please look in your own Communities to find such worthy causes and apply to the PGM’s Fund for support. There can be no guarantees of success; however, if the application matches the criteria then that’s the start! Remembrance Tie This is a reminder. I have authorised the wearing of the special tie, introduced in 2018, during the month of November to acknowledge those gallant Freemasons, men and women who have died or have been injured during times of conflict. There is a letter in circulation describing how to obtain your tie or simply click this link The Victoria Cross - the highest and most prestigious award of the British Honours system. Awarded for valour “in the presence of the enemy”. It is known that least 178 Freemasons have been awarded this highest award for gallantry. Raising our Civic Profile - What Else Can We Do? Over to you Brethren – I am always looking for ideas! Remember - aim to succeed! If, however, it does not work then learn from the experience! Enhancing Member Experiences Meeting of Installation Panel Members I am most grateful to the senior members of the Province who willingly represent me at Installation Meetings. In preparation for the new Masonic Season, the annual meeting of the Installation Panel has been held at Batley. There was a time when the response to the Toast to Province was a rare opportunity to inform the Brethren of events and Provincial activities. How things have changed! With Monthly Briefings to Lodges, Liaison Officers, Websites and Social Media - there are now many more outlets for communication and more to come. My Representatives will continue to inform and engage by providing key information in their Response. I do thank all of our Lodges for the welcome extended to me, the other Rulers and my Representatives who attend Installation meetings. It is indeed a wonderful opportunity to talk with every Brother and an opportunity for every Lodge to demonstrate the highest standards. International Tripling with the Inspectorates of Portugal and of Malta The planning is almost complete with a really excellent proposal from the Company of Stewards now being considered by the respective Rulers of the three Masonic areas. Conference for New and Young Masons’ Clubs Date Saturday, 28th September 2019 – Leicester & Conference for University Scheme Lodges Date: Saturday, 16th November 2019 – Chester For both of these Conferences, I was delighted to see the names put forward by my Assistants. To illustrate the importance of “being there” and my commitment to our Members - the Conference Fees for nominated Delegates will be paid for by the Province. 2019 Initiates’ Evenings to be held in February and March 2020 Only two Area dates remain to be confirmed. I encourage all Brethren to support their new Members and their families at these important annual events. A much enjoyed part of the evening is the delivery of the “Ancient Charge”. I am keen for our newer Brethren to deliver this and if you are interested – please make it known to your Liaison Officer. Historically, one Brother has delivered all of the Charge – I am, however, open to offers for Teams of Brethren to deliver the Charge in parts. I’m keen to try this! Over to you Brethren! 2020 Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Harrogate Plans for our Meeting to be a “Great Member Experience” are now approaching the final iteration stage. There will be plenty to read about soon! Learning & Development (L&D) My thanks and also a request! Firstly how very pleased I was to see “To Deliver a Nugget” appearing as an agenda item on Summonses. Now my request to other Lodges - Please would you try this? The content of the Nuggets provide a wonderful platform to stimulate discussion over dinner. Some Lodges are also using Nuggets at Lodges of Instruction or with Brethren by their Mentors. Did you know? There are some 50 new items about to be loaded on “Solomon” AND professional “Voice-Overs” for some of the key Modules is coming soon! Locally, our Provincial “Masonic Light” Programme continues to deliver quality Lectures and I do encourage participation by everyone. I record my appreciation to our own “Masonic light” Team. When it comes to Masonic L&D all the evidence confirms that Members of all ages and experience are hungry for knowledge. And Finally: Plans for a “Super September” September is traditionally the start of the Masonic Season and there is much happening! 5th – Provincial Team Visit (Full Team) – Fidelity Lodge No: 289, Leeds 9th – Provincial Team Visit (Full Team) – Alfred Lodge No: 306, Otley 11th – Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge, Freemasons’ Hall, London 12th – Centenary Meeting of Victory Lodge No: 3922, Hipperholme 19th - Prestonian Lecture - Leeds and District Lodge of Installed Masters No: 7918, Leeds 24th – Installation – Harewood Lodge No: 5667, Otley 25th – L&D Project Team – Freemasons’ Hall, London 27th – Centenary Meeting of Salarden Lodge No: 3971, Milnsbridge 28th – New and Young Masons’ Conference – Leicester 29th – Lunch for Liaison Officers and families – Coniston Hotel, Skipton A Thought to Finish: "Here’s to the Brother who stands plumb to his principles, yet is level to his Brethren!” - Old Masonic Toast My Fraternal best wishes to you and yours as always. July - A Month in the Life of a Provincial Grand Master!
Weathering the weather! Last month it was rain now it’s the extraordinary high temperatures. It’s the early hours of the morning as I write. What searing heat even now at 2.00 am. Keep cool Brethren! It’s been another busy month – I remember that my late Father told me when I became a Mason that “We did not do very much between the months June and October”. How times change and continue to change! Starting with Congratulations! There are two really significant achievements to celebrate in the “Family of Freemasonry”, confirming the very high respect in which West Riding Freemasonry is held and the great personal talents and abilities of our members: The Ancient and Accepted Rite 33⁰ (Colloquially known as –“Rose Croix”) - WBro. John Boyington, PSGD, DepProvGM, has been elected to the Supreme Council 33⁰. The Societas Rosicrucian in Anglia (S.R.I.A.) - WBro Anthony Llewellyn, PSGD, PAsstProvGM, has been installed as the Supreme Magus. Both are magnificent achievements and these worthy Brethren are to be celebrated and congratulated. Centenary Celebrations at Lindley Masonic Hall, Huddersfield! The celebration meeting of Cambodunum Lodge No: 3953 was a magnificent occasion. With the temperature soaring above 35⁰ we met and baked in fraternal union! My thanks to everyone involved in the extensive planning that culminated in a splendid and memorable meeting. Interesting fact! The Lodge nearly closed a few years ago and then the Members decided to do things differently. The outcome is now a thriving lodge with plenty of candidates. Next year will see a full team of Master Masons below the Chair. Proof Positive! It can be done. Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat! Increasing Membership - Survive to Thrive! The Members’ Pathway - Shoots of Growth Appearing! It is early days and it is important not to be overly optimistic. However, – we have experienced a 4% increase in Initiates during the first half of the Year! The Lodges that have adopted and implemented the pragmatic advice within the Members’ Pathway appear to be benefiting. Proposed New Lodge at Garforth The Petition will be formally considered at the September Meeting of Grand Lodge. All things being equal – Monday, 10th of February 2020 could well herald the arrival of a new Lodge in our Province. Fingers crossed! Cambodunum Lodge No: 3953 Please read above for a success story! Want to know the secret of success? Why not visit the Lodge to see for yourself? Annual Meeting with Heads of Other Orders! This is an important Annual Meeting where we conduct a collective health check on Freemasonry in the West Riding. On this occasion, it was a pleasure to welcome the local Heads of both the Masonic Order of Athelstan and also the Order of Pilgrim Preceptors for the first time to the meeting and into the Family of West Riding Freemasonry. Raising our Civic Profile - “Be There - Be Seen!” Charity Matters Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) A moving ceremony took place in Castleford when a Room in the Ex-Services Club was dedicated and opened in memory of two local soldiers who were killed on active service in Iraq and in Afghanistan. A donation from the PGM’s Fund contributed to this Project. It is so pleasing to see local media covering the distribution of the grants My usual plea – Please look in your own Communities to identify such worthy causes and apply to the PGM’s Fund for support. Graduation Dinner - Bradford University As long-time supporters of medical research at the University, including a Major grant in 2018, attending the Graduation Dinner provides the opportunity to raise the profile of Freemasonry among the local academic community and community Leaders. This year was no different where many new contacts were established. It used to surprise me, but no longer, when I am told in conversation that “Freemasons? We’ve never heard of you?” This of course always provides a great opportunity! SNAPS Leeds A small charity in North Leeds supporting children with special needs received a grant direct from the Masonic Charitable Foundation in London. The formal presentation provided an eye-opening opportunity to see the wonderful work that volunteers can do to support these children and their parents. What Else Can We Do? Over to you Brethren - I am always looking for ideas! Remember – If you do not try something new then you’ll never know if it would have worked! The Great Yorkshire Show Yes it was indeed “Great” and we were there again. Plenty of visitors came to talk with us on the Stand. The Lady Masons joined us again and will do so for the foreseeable future. The general public have no problem in understanding that we are separate Organisations. Enhancing Member Experiences International Tripling with the Inspectorates of Portugal and of Malta More progress! The first Project meeting has been held to bring this into being. Details are now been finalised. My thanks to the Company of Past Provincial Stewards who are leading the charge. Conference for New and Young Masons’ Clubs Date confirmed as: Saturday, 28th September 2019 – Leicester We shall be represented. Conference for University Scheme Lodges Date confirmed as: Saturday, 16th November 2019 – Chester We shall be represented. However, this is also the day of our own Royal Arch Provincial Grand Chapter. 2019 Initiates’ Evenings to be held in early 2020 The dates for 3 of the 5 Areas in the Province are now in the diary. 2020 Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Harrogate Confirming that this will be a great “Member Experience” – Plans are advancing. Watch this space! Learning & Development Have you seen the offerings and Nuggets on Solomon? And Finally: Plans for August It is an active month . . . Provincial Planning for 2020. Meetings at Grand Lodge concerning Learning & Development across the UGLE Constitution and the important Briefing to my Installation Representatives to kick-off a new Masonic Season which begins in September. A Thought to Finish: "My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there!” ●C.F. Kettering My Fraternal best wishes to you and yours as always. David RWBro. David S. “At midnight, in the month of June, I stand beneath the mystic moon.” Edgar Allan Poe
An Interesting Month! The Rain Raineth and the Longest Day!
Did anyone see the sunrise at Stonehenge? The Life of a Provincial Grand Master! When I do write my memoirs, the Chapter on “Being a Provincial Grand Master” will make interesting reading! Much of the work is not wearing regalia or even attending Events and takes place well away from Lodge Meetings. As with all well-managed organisations, the vast amount of “behind the scenes” activity makes for a great member experience. The current issue of “Freemasonry Today” and all of the Leadership messages coming out of Grand Lodge indicates that Freemasonry needs to evolve rapidly to survive and then to thrive. There are always “Facts” and “Feelings” involved with any change, and the “Facts” show us that things do need to change. I am deeply conscious that such matters must be considered, owned and implemented by the members of Private Lodges.
At the recent Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge in London, I did feel pangs of sadness to see the names of Lodges in our Province listed as having returned their Warrants. Lodges will come and go, and it does make interesting reading to note the histories of many of our older Lodges, which indicate the number of times when the end was seen as inevitable. Then something happened! A lesson from History Brethren? Either the Members chose to do something about the situation, and the Lodge continued or did nothing, and the Lodge surrendered its Warrant and closed.
Masonry Universal? A trip to Lisbon in the company of about 90 Freemasons from many other Regular Constitutions in Europe was a delight! Even with many languages being used, it is clear that we all face similar challenges, and it was a delight to share our own experiences. The guided tour of sites of Masonic interest was much appreciated. Very much a case of “seek and ye shall find” with many Masonic emblems and symbols in clear sight. Lunch with Past Assistant Provincial Grand Masters A lovely tradition in our Province is that a lunch is arranged to celebrate the end of a Ruler era. The reign of two, now Past Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, was the cause for thanks and celebration. WBros. Paul Clarke, PSGD and Tony Llewellyn, PSGD hosted a most enjoyable occasion and a good time was had by all. As I always say - There may well be the rank of a Past Provincial Grand Officer; however, there is no such thing as a Past Mason. We all just move on to different roles and responsibilities and take our experience with us. Updates on Objectives: Increasing Membership - Survive to Thrive! The Members’ Pathway - If an Activity does not work - Try something different! The news of some growing Lodges keeps coming in. The constant message is that Lodges are using the recommendations contained within the Members’ Pathway, so success is not a secret. Alas! There is still a number who have not had a Candidate for a considerable time. Grand Officers The consultative meetings with Grand Officers hosted by Assistant Provincial Grand Masters are now taking place. We all await with great anticipation the output and Action Plans to increase local membership. These will be shared with everyone. I do urge every Lodge to draw on the vast experience of Grand Officers to assist in increasing our numbers. New Lodge at Garforth The Petition is now being considered at Grand Lodge. It has been most pleasing to see the consultative and collaborative approach being used during this pre-Consecration phase. It is clear to me that every Founder is fully engaged with the decision making process. Raising our Civic Profile - “Be There!” Civic Engagement Details of the Yorkshire Day celebrations on the 1st of August at Whitby are awaited and will be circulated. I do encourage every Member and Lodge to look locally for any opportunity to engage with and to support our Civic Leaders and Events. Charity Matters Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) Minor Grants – What a splendid and eclectic list of worthy causes supported this time. It was really pleasing to approve applications from Royal Arch Chapters as well as Lodges. If your Lodge/Chapter is successful in obtaining a grant, please would you celebrate the occasion by visiting the recipients to see them at their work in the Community? I am particularly grateful to the Committee and especially W Bro. Ian Wright, PAGDC, who is the PGM’s Fund Administrator for all their ongoing hard work. My usual plea - Please look out in your own Communities to find such worthy causes and apply to the PGM’s Fund for support. Enhancing Member Experiences International Twinning (or is it Tripling?) Progress! A meeting has been arranged to be held in Leeds with representatives of the Inspectorates of both Malta and of Portugal. Please “Watch this Space!”
Provincial Quiz - 2019
I note that the dates and forms are out! Who will challenge the 2018 Champions? My thanks to the Company of Past Provincial Stewards for making this happen. Conference for New and Young Masons’ Clubs We shall be represented by Lodge Members at Leicester in September Conference for Universities Scheme Lodges We shall be represented by Lodge Members at Chester in November Promotion of W Bro. Brian Priestley, PJGD, PProvGTreas It was a pleasure to promote W Bro. Brian in his own Lodge to the rank of PPSGW. The Moorland Lodge meeting was really well attended and supported by a number of Past Rulers. 2019 Initiates’ Evenings I was delighted to put into my diary the first booked event to be held in 2020. Please support your own new members at these events – they appreciate such support – and so do I. And Finally: Plans for July Although a quiet month for Lodge Meetings, the pulse of Freemasonry continues! I will be attending a number of events: A Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) award celebration in Leeds to the charity “Special Needs and Parent Support” (SNAPS), the Annual “Heads of Other Orders” Meeting where the “Family of Freemasonry” in the Province comes together to discuss matters of mutual interest. A meeting at Grand Lodge concerning Learning & Development across the UGLE Constitution and I look forward as always to working on our own, our very own, “The Yorkshire Freemasons’ Stand” at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. A Thought to Finish: “If there was ever a time to dare, to make a difference, to embark on something worth doing, IT IS NOW”. unknown My Fraternal best wishes to you and yours as always. Dear Brethren, What a Busy and Enjoyable Month! Let me start with our Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge Well! The Month of May started with a “Big Bang” at Harrogate at our Annual Provincial Meeting. There were loads of smiling faces; however perhaps it was too much of a good thing? I believe that we have now arrived at a critical point in the evolution of the content of our Annual Meeting. Over recent years, agenda items have been added and this year there was too much to digest. In evaluating this, while there has been much positive comment about the Meeting content, there have been requests to consider reducing the time taken up. The experience at the Majestic Hotel was much improved generally. Changes already planned for 2020:
One of the key questions to be considered will concern the presentation of the Major Grants from the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund. Flying the West Riding Flag at other Provincial Meetings Visits to the Annual Meetings of other Provinces are always joyous occasions and an opportunity to renew old friendships from many parts of the Constitution. In May, the Province of Nottinghamshire and our Sister Province of Yorkshire, North & East Ridings welcomed deputations from our Province. The consistent theme of the need for managed change to survive and thrive was heard. Lodge Centenaries At the end of World War One – the “War to End All Wars”, it is little wonder that those gallant men returning from the horrors of the trenches sought the refuge of a safe haven of peace and camaraderie in Freemasonry. Many new Lodges were consecrated to accommodate an ever increasing membership and as a result we are now in a period when 17 Lodges will celebrate their Centenary. Their first hundred years of existence! It is a unique celebratory meeting for each Lodge and it is ever my endeavour to make every meeting special for the current Members. In May, I attended the Centenary Meetings of Don Valley Lodge No: 3890, Doncaster and Unity Lodge No: 3930, Huddersfield. A really good time was had by all at memorable and most enjoyable occasions of great celebration. To remind us that we are guided by, and under the watchful gaze of the Great Architect of the Universe, the Orations delivered by W Bro. Peter Holt, PJGD, ProvGChaplain at Doncaster and W Bro. The Rev. Frank Chappell, PJGD, PProvJGW at Huddersfield were both inspirational and delivered with great passion. With so many Centenary celebrations being held, the extended Oration delivery Team also includes W Bros. Brian Inston, ProvDepGChaplain and Roger Quick, PProvGChaplain. We are so very fortunate to have such a depth of talent in our Provincial Chaplaincy. The late VW Bro. Stuart Charles Grantham, PGSwdB, PDepProvGM We were all so very touched to read the tributes recorded on our Provincial Website confirming the high esteem in which our late Brother was held. A large number of Brethren joined the congregation at the packed Funeral Service. It was indeed a celebration of the life of a wonderful Father, Grandfather and a true Friend and Brother to all. The anecdotes taken from VWBro. Stuart’s life, delivered by his children and our own W Bro. Ian Smith, PGStB, ProvGDC, provided vivid and amusing illustrations of a caring and fun-seeking gentleman who saw the good in everyone and everything. He will be sorely missed; however the memories of his achievements will last until time shall be no more. Assistant Provincial Grand Master - Installation Assisted by my Senior Team, I Installed W Bro. Brian Duncan Littlejohn as Assistant Provincial Grand Master with leadership responsibility for Area 4 at a meeting of Royal Brunswick Lodge No: 296. Another splendid occasion in the history of our Province. Sometimes We Get Things Wrong So We Put it Right! If an error is made then it is important to acknowledge the situation, apologise and correct matters as soon as possible. It has been the custom in the Province to promote certain Provincial Executive Officers on their retirement from Office. Something went wrong! W Bro. Brian Priestley, PJGD, PProvJGW stood down this year as our long-serving Provincial Grand Treasurer and this should have been acknowledged at the Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Harrogate by a promotion to Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden. Somehow this was inadvertently overlooked and I have apologised to W Bro. Brian. After such long and distinguished service I was personally under the impression that a promotion in Provincial rank had already been conferred. The situation was further exacerbated by the fact that we also have a Brother in the Province with exactly the same name who holds the rank of Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden. So! I am taking Harrogate to W Bro. Brian! On Wednesday, 26th June the Provincial Team supported by a number of Past Rulers will attend to Moreland Lodge No: 6591 where I shall promote W Bro. Brian on the Floor of his own Lodge. Updates on Objectives: Increasing Membership - Survive to Thrive! The Members’ Pathway - Keep Going! It Works! “If at first you don’t succeed; try, try again!” (Attrib: Robert the Bruce – 1314) I am delighted to hear that we have Lodges that are thriving with an abundance of new Members. Alas! There are still a number who have not had a Candidate for a considerable time. What to do? There are so many ideas in the “Members’ Pathway”; however as I said in my Address at Provincial Grand Lodge – Participation in any of the UGLE initiatives is entirely voluntary. We do have resources available to assist within the Province but the first move must be from Private Lodges through their Liaison Officer. UGLE Members’ Pathway Conference - London 21st May 2019 An outstanding success! There are hundreds if not thousands of suitable Candidates out there! We need to make the first move! Open Days - Well Done Huddersfield! The joint effort of Huddersfield Lodges with Open Days is to be admired. Success through synergetic co-operation will always produce greater results! Grand Officers The Assistant Provincial Grand Masters are meeting with Grand Officers in the respective Areas to formulate plans for local assistance and support. New Lodge at Garforth – Petition Signed – Grand Lodge Response Awaited! Well, the deed has been done! With nearly 50 Petitioners for the new Lodge, I have signed the formal Petition document and it is now winging its way to London for verification. The target date for the Consecration, subject to approval, is February 2020 at Castle Grove Masonic Hall, Headingley, Leeds. The Lodge will be welcomed into the Area 5 Family of Lodges. Raising our Civic Profile – Being Seen to Make a Difference! Civic Engagement The Province will again be participating in the Yorkshire Day celebrations on the 1st of August. This year it is a trip to Whitby and I would welcome any Brother who would like to be part of the joint West Riding/North & East Ridings Delegation. Charity Matters Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) 2019 Major Grant Recipients My Goodness! All those happy faces at Harrogate. (Just see the centre pages of the current “White Rose” Magazine). All the recipients were very grateful, amazed at the spectacle and delighted by the generosity of West Riding Freemasons. The Major Grants awarded all satisfy the fundamental requirement of making a significant difference in our communities. My thanks to W Bro. Tony Brailsford, PSGD, PProvAsstGM, who acted as Compère to introduce the recipients. Remember! It’s never too early to start planning for 2020 – Please look wide for worthy causes in your localities Brethren. Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) – Night Vision Goggles A visit to the YAA at their Nostell Priory Base in Wakefield is always a pleasure. This time it was to present a set of the special Night Vision Goggles that are essential to allow YAA to save more lives by flying during the hours of darkness. A donation of £20,000 was necessary to make the purchase (These things do not come cheaply Brethren!) and generously provided by our own West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. It was a delight and most fitting to have been accompanied by W Bro. Stuart Cadman, PAGDC, PProvSGW, Chairman of WRMCL. Wakefield Hospice - Charity Donation from the Masonic Charity Foundation (MCF) I can recommend a visit to this Hospice where we were greeted by the staff who all exuded positivity! The major donation from MCF will allow the Hospice to engage with the local Business and Education Community to raise awareness to end of life support. Lifelites – A Charity for Children’s Hospices What now seems to be an annual occurrence , we welcomed Lifelites on their South to North 2019 flying visits through Provinces. WRML made a generous donation of £1000 to mark the visit. As Freemasons we are taught to prepare for our inevitable destiny. Hospices provide such practical comfort and support to the dying and their relatives. A really worthy cause to support! Enhancing Member Experiences 2018 Initiates’ Evenings After I have written this month’s Blog, I will be leaving for Baildon for the Area 1 Initiates’ Evening attended by Brethren, Families and Friends. I am told that there will be a goodly number of around 100 in attendance. Next year, I would like to invite the 2018 Initiates, Lodge Mentors and Lodge Members to accompany and support the 2019 intake. White Rose Magazine – 59th Edition – Spring 2019 WOW! What a winner! It is little wonder that our Provincial Magazine is so well received in all parts of the Masonic World. It is brilliant! May I ask all Members to promote our own “White Rose” Magazine by advertising and by sharing the publication with family and friends. It is always pleasing to see copies in local Surgeries, Libraries and other Public Places to show what we are as Freemasons and what we do in our Communities. My ongoing thanks to the Editor, W Bro. Peter Doherty, PProvJGW and his Team of really hard working Freemasons. Much appreciated! UGLE Learning & Development Conference – London – 20th May 2019 The first Annual Conference was held at Freemasons Hall, London to further embed a Culture of L&D throughout UGLE. Why? The membership responded to the Grand Lodge survey by saying that this is what is required to attract and retain Members. The Solomon suite of Learning solutions is ever-growing and I am looking forward to listening to the soon to be released Modules which will be enhanced by the “voice-overs” of professional actors. “Nuggets” from Solomon? A series of short papers to be read to Lodges/LOI’s/Young Masons’ Clubs to stimulate thinking, discussion and further research. Looking for a starter? Why not look at “Ya-buts” by writing the following address in your web browsers - https://solomon.ugle.org.uk/course/view.php?id=85 UGLE Masonic Meeting Plans Conference - Wise Words for local consideration What are the contingency plans for emergency situations at Masonic Halls? Not just fire or flood but what would happen if the building became unusable for meetings? Support for Masonic Organists Music! One of the Liberal Arts and Sciences! We all know the positive difference Organ music makes to our Meetings! The Company of Provincial Grand Stewards is collating requests for support from Organists. We need them Brethren! My thanks to W Bro. Dr Simon Lindley, PJGD, ProvGOrg who will be conducting “Master Classes” for all. Young Masons/Light Blue’s Clubs Keep it up! Breakfast Meetings are innovative and clearly successful. It is really pleasing to see the creation of more such Clubs in the Province. Why not deliver a “Solomon Nugget” (see above) to stimulate a discussion? International Twinning (or is it Tripling?) Members of the Company of Provincial Stewards are facilitating discussions with the UGLE Inspectorates of both Portugal and also of Malta. The concept is to create Twinning/Tripling relationships. Watch this space! There are plenty of flights from Leeds/Bradford and Manchester to enjoy the sunshine and Masonic Fellowship! Provincial Quiz - 2019 Thinking caps on! Watch out for the booking forms and be part of this highly competitive and fun event. A look at UGLE Solomon Modules will be excellent preparation (so I am told!). And Finally: Plans for June I will be attending a meeting of supporters at Bradford University – a 2018 Major Grant recipient, a celebratory lunch for Past Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, a Jubilee Certificate presentation to W Bro. Brian W. Price at Harrogate, the first visit of 2019/20 Acting Provincial Officers to the Lodge of Amity No: 4148, Baildon and the promotion of W Bro. Brian Priestley to PProvSGW at Moorland Lodge No: 6591, Baildon. Plus! The usual and unseen loads and loads of meetings, administration and paperwork! (I am grabbing a four-day break in Lisbon with my wife as we’ve never been there before – I do hope that my Tourist level Madeiran Portuguese will be understood!) A Thought to Finish: The Grand Secretary commissioned an extensive public survey across England & Wales earlier this year regarding attitudes towards Freemasonry. The results included the following:
