Dear Brethren, Ruler News (1) - New Deputy Provincial Grand Master: I Installed W Bro. John Boyington, SGD, AsstProvGM as my Deputy at Tapton Hall, Sheffield on Monday, 15th of April 2019. A glittering occasion held under the Banner of one of our daylight Lodges, the Lodge of South Yorkshire No: 9633. My thanks to the Lodge for organising the event at short notice and to all the many Brethren who attended the Installation. VW Bro. Stuart Grantham, PGSwdB, PDepProvGM is now in hospital and we are in regular contact. The gift of a special Teddy Bear was received with a huge smile! Please continue to keep VW Bro. Stuart and his family in your thoughts and prayers Brethren. Ruler News (2) - New Assistant Provincial Grand Master: W Bro. Brian Duncan Littlejohn will be Installed as Assistant Provincial Grand Master with leadership responsibility for Area 4 within our Province on the evening of Monday, 13th May 2019 at Tapton Hall, Sheffield. The Installation will be held under the Banner of Royal Brunswick Lodge No: 296. Grand Officer Briefings: I have conducted two Briefings for our Grand officers. One at Tapton Hall and one at Castle Grove, Leeds, both delivered to receptive and enthusiastic Grand Officers within our Province. The Grand Officers will be adopting a higher profile to share their experience in supporting the following Provincial Objectives that dovetail into the Grand Lodge Strategy for Freemasonry. The Briefings will now be annual events and followed up by Area Meetings Chaired by the Assistant Provincial Grand Masters. Updates on Objectives: Increasing Membership The Membership Pathway - Continued Implementation! I have asked the Grand Officers in our Province to increase their support to Lodges. The sharing of good ideas is at the heart of the strategy. The New Lodge at Garforth - To Meet at Garforth Golf Club. Further steady progress towards the goal of a Consecration reported this month. More than 40 Brethren have now expressed an interest in becoming Founders. The London “Yorkshire” Lodge A small deputation from our Province and also from the Province of Yorkshire, North and East Ridings attended a meeting of the Lodge that will become the home for this “new” Lodge. Reports from our friends in the South indicate that the culmination of this project to establish a “Yorkshire” Lodge in London is imminent. Raising our Civic Profile - Making a Difference! Civic Engagement Always looking for ideas please Brethren. Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) Major Grants - 2019 Feedback regarding the awarding of Major Grants to the six 2019 Recipients has been very positive. I shall look forward to presenting the cheques during the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Harrogate on 7th May. Minor Grants – Q1/2019 Again, really good feedback from Brethren regarding the awards of minor grants to worthy local causes. Sometimes small amounts can make all the difference – even survival! I would like to see many more applications from all parts of the Province please. Enhancing Member Experiences Centenary Meeting of University Lodge, Sheffield No: 3911 The many years of planning this meeting came to fruition at a magnificent celebration of the first 100 years of existence of the University Lodge, Sheffield No: 3911 held at Tapton Hall.. My congratulations to all concerned. Well Done! If a time tunnel was possible to connect 2019 with 1919, one wonders what the Brethren gazing down each end of the tunnel would make of it all? Incidentally, 19 Brethren from Romania attended the Centenary and that would probably have raised eyebrows in 1919. 50th Jubilee Certificate to a Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master. It was a pleasure to visit the home of VW Bro. Nevil Parkinson, PGSwdB, PDepProvGM to make the presentation. I was received warmly and with great hospitality. We reminisced at length about VW Bro Nevil’s experiences and the need for change to safeguard the future of Freemasonry. VW Bro. Nevil’s good lady wife Ann was present which made for an intimate and special occasion. I have absolutely no problem with ladies attending such presentations as they are part of our Masonic lives and without their support, our involvement in the Craft we love could well be severely curtailed. There was a recent example at a Lodge Meeting where the Lodge was properly “Called-Off” for the actual presentation. 2018/19 Acting Provincial Officers Visit to West Vale What a splendid finale to the year! The Team went to Mexborough Lodge No: 6117. A really good time was had by all and a fitting last outing for the Team of 2018/19 who will all take away many happy memories of a glorious year. 2018/2019 Acting Provincial Officers Lunch Over 100 Brethren/Companions and their Ladies attended the Annual Luncheon for both Craft and Royal Arch Acting Officers of the year at Hoyle Court, Baildon. As ever, a lovely meal enjoyed in wonderful company. 2018 Initiates’ Evenings One more to go! The last Event of the Year is scheduled to be held at Hoyle Court, Baildon on Thursday, 30th May 2019. I encourage Mentors and Brethren to support their new Members. 2019/20 Area Visits by Acting Provincial Officers The Lodges chosen are being contacted with the first visit already booked. Appointments to Grand Rank The Annual Investiture Meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, 24th April at Freemasons’ Hall, London. As I am writing this in advance to meet the publication deadline, I anticipate being able to report next month that the event was its usual fantastic success. Visitors from Ohio I met up with a party of 30 Brethren and wives from Ohio at the Holiday Inn, Garforth. They were on a very busy tour of England and Wales and the Garforth Hotel was their base for visiting York. I have a close relationship with Ohio and it was a pleasure to welcome such lovely people to our shores. And Finally: Plans for May CLARION CALL - THE ANNUAL MEETING Provincial Grand Lodge - Harrogate - Tuesday 7th May 2019 This is shaping up yet again to be a really tremendous occasion and I encourage Master Masons to attend to extend their knowledge and friendships. BUSINESS AS USUAL Apart from our Annual Meeting, I can see a number of activities in my diary including the Centenary Meeting of Don Valley Lodge, Doncaster No: 3890, the Installation of a new Assistant Provincial Grand Master at Tapton Hall, Sheffield, the Annual Meeting of the Province of Nottinghamshire, a cheque presentation to Wakefield Hospice, the Installation Meeting of Bawtry Lodge No: 5174, the Annual Learning and Development Conference at Freemasons’ Hall, London, the Centenary Meeting of Unity Lodge, Huddersfield No: 3930. That’s not bad for a traditionally “quiet” May! My Fraternal best wishes to you and yours as always. RW Bro. David S. Pratt - Provincial Grand Master ![]()
Dear Brethren, The Spring is Sprung, the grass is riz! (Alas! Our main road was flooded and we were cut off for a while!) Major Announcement – Change of Rulers: This information has already been circulated widely throughout the Province. It was with great sadness that I accepted the resignation of my Deputy VW Bro. Stuart Grantham, PGSwdB. Our thoughts and prayers are with Stuart who is about to undergo a course of medical treatment which means he will be out of circulation for a number of months. I sing the praises of a remarkable and kind man and my Brother Freemason. My right hand counsellor and a voice of moderation. These attributes have been much appreciated, especially when my thoughts strayed into overly “blue sky” thinking or my wanting to make things happen at an even greater pace. The following words spring to mind as I reflect on, and praise Stuart’s outstanding contribution made to this Province during the past two and a half years: “Exemplary in conduct, courteous in manner, easy of address, steady and firm in principle”. Please keep VW Bro. Stuart and his family in your thoughts and prayers Brethren. Our World has to move on….....……………. We are taught as Freemasons to embrace change and to anticipate the impact. I have therefore appointed W Bro. John Boyington, SGD, Asst ProvGM , to become my Deputy in succession to VW Bro. Grantham. His Installation will take place at Tapton Hall, Sheffield on the morning of Monday, 15th of April 2019. W Bro. Boyington’s forthcoming promotion creates a vacancy for an Assistant Provincial Grand Master. I have been pleased to appoint our current Provincial Senior Grand Warden, W Bro. Brian Littlejohn, to become an APGM with leadership responsibility for Area 4 within our Province. The Installation will take place at Tapton Hall, Sheffield on the evening of Monday, 13th May 2019. Information regarding booking places at the respective Installations will be circulated soon. “Well Done! Thou Good and Faithful Servants!” Updates on Objectives: Increasing Membership The Membership Pathway – Implementation for Success! It is March and it is Springtime when growth is everywhere in Nature. Now is the time Brethren to nurture the growth of our Lodges. I note the number of Initiates joining our ranks are of all ages. Well done to Lodges who are implementing the Membership Pathway – It’s working! This is particularly pleasing and I encourage Lodges who are struggling for candidates to contact those who are getting this right. My discussions with such Lodges confirm that they would be delighted to assist. Candidates? Please remember that we look for quality and not just quantity! New Lodge at Garforth - To Meet at Garforth Golf Club. The news continues to be encouraging! I am being kept aware of the progress being made and I am delighted with what I am hearing. A new Lodge in a growing part of the Province? Now that could be a thought for others to consider? There are so many new housing developments being planned and being built all around us. A London “Yorkshire” Lodge We are keeping an eye on this development with interest and providing support. The Brethren involved are in final negotiations to take over the Warrant of another London Lodge that intended to close. This is the way they currently do such things in the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London. A request to change the name of the Lodge will be made to The Most Worshipful The Grand Master in due time. I understand that there will be a special meeting to celebrate the transition and I hope that many of you will join me with my contingent of West Riding Brethren on that night in London. Raising our Civic Profile – Making a Difference! Civic Engagement Following a most enjoyable Dinner Dance arranged by Area 4 Lodges at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham, a deputation of Brethren has been invited to take tea with the Mayor of Barnsley. Such occasions are pleasurable and important in advancing our increased Civic engagement. Please do keep looking for similar opportunities Brethren. Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) Major Grants – 2019 The PGM’s Fund Committee sat and deliberated the nominations from Lodges and Chapters. Recommendations have been passed to WRMCL and decisions will be published soon. The successful applicants will be delighted and the grants awarded will make a significant difference in our Communities Minor Grants – Q1/2019 A goodly number of awards have been recommended to WRMCL and again, details of the successful applicants will be published soon. It is a pleasure to support such a diversity of worthy local worth causes. These “Minor Grants” make a difference. We know because the recipients tell us. For both Major and Minor Grants, we do try to support every qualifying application. However, this is not always possible. I do wish to thank all Lodges and Royal Arch Chapters for their hard work in supporting the applicants in preparing their submissions. I would certainly encourage far more applications from all parts of the Province. Area 1 Reception Dinner for Q4/218 Minor Grant Recipients The event was hosted by the Lodge of Peace No: 3988 at Hoyle Court, Baildon. It was a pleasure to meet the recipients of the Area 1, Q4/2018 awards. Representatives from the organisations sang our praises as we were informed of the positive impact that donations had already made in local communities. Enhancing Member Experiences 2018/19 Acting Provincial Officers Visit to Castleford The floods abated and the road opened! Thank goodness! We were able to go to Castleford as planned. A packed Lodge Room witnessed a wonderful Initiation ceremony. The Team were well received by the Master, Officers and Members of Legiolium Lodge No: 1542 and treated to a magnificent ceremony and a splendid Festive Board. 2018 Initiates’ Evenings These events are being really well received by our new Brethren and their families. It is such a pleasure to meet and greet everyone and a successful buffet meal has provided an opportunity to circulate. Similar events are planned for 2019 Initiates and their Families early in 2020. I have already asked the 2018 intake to escort our 2019 Initiates and I would also like Lodge Mentors to attend with other supporting Lodge Brethren My thanks to everyone involved in the organisation and the delivery of these now Annual occasions. Prestonian Lecture 2019 – Thursday, 19th of September 2019 –- Castle Grove Leeds The Leeds and District Lodge of Installed Masters No: 7918 has been selected to host one of the few official presentations of the 2019 Prestonian Lecture. This is a rare and richly deserved honour. W Bro. Mike Karn, of Quatuor Coronati Lodge No: 2076 and Temple of Athene Lodge No: 9541, has been appointed by the United Grand Lodge of England as Prestonian Lecturer for 2019. His lecture is entitled “English Freemasonry during the Great War”. Please watch out for further information and book your place immediately as it is anticipated that demand for tickets will be very high. 2019/20 Area Visits by Acting Provincial Officers I have made my choices! Please watch this space! I confirm that there are no costs involved for any Lodge selected for such a visit. Acting Provincial Officers pay their own way and that includes me! Appointments to Grand Rank and Provincial Grand Rank “Those envelopes” arrived on doormats early in March. To Brethren who have been so honoured – please accept my hearty congratulations. The many, many hours spent by the Rulers Team ensure consistency and the use of an electronic system for the first time has proved an outstanding success. Regarding honours, may I remind Brethren of the published sage words of VW Bro. John Rushworth, PGSwdB, PDepProvGM – Appointment to any first rank, Acting or Past, should be considered as possibly the only one to be received. There should be no expectation of automatic future promotion. Breakfast Club for Young Masons and Friends A ground-breaking initiative! This time in Harrogate where 30 Brethren and their friends enjoyed a hearty breakfast at a restaurant. It was a tremendous get-together and I commend the idea to all throughout the Province. New Masons’ Clubs The numbers are growing and what an opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of other new Masons and potential candidates. The variety of venues being used is impressive where a drink and meal can be enjoyed in very good company. Provincial Company of Stewards The Meeting of the Leeds Lodge No: 9867 was a sea of crimson aprons and collars as the Present and Past Provincial Stewards held their inaugural “Red Apron Visit”. Well done and here’s to the next time! And Finally: My Plans for April Another busy month ahead includes the final Team visit of the 2018/19 Acting Provincial Officers to Mexborough Lodge No: 6117, a 50- year Jubilee Certificate presentation for VW Bro. Nevil Parkinson, PGSwdB , PDepProvGM; Grand Officers’ briefings, a visit by Brethren from the Great State of Ohio – USA; the Annual Lunch for both Craft and Royal Arch Acting Officers and their partners, the Installation of a new Deputy Provincial Grand Master; the Centenary Meeting of University Lodge, Sheffield No: 3911, the Annual Investiture Meeting at Grand Lodge in London - Then . On the Horizon The Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge will be held at the Royal Hall, Harrogate on Tuesday, 7th of May followed by Dinner at the Majestic Hotel. Great News! A team led by W Bro. Michael Dyson, our Provincial Grand Secretary, has negotiated contracts for us to continue to hold the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at the Royal Hall for at least the next five years AND a three-year dining commitment with the Majestic. Contracts will then be renegotiated at the appropriate times. This is brilliant news and contingency plans to avert a repeat of previous issues can now be filed away! I extend my grateful thanks to W. Bro Dyson and the negotiation team for securing the advance bookings at such wonderful and historic venues. My Fraternal best wishes to you and yours as always. “2018 Was Good – 2019 Will Be EVEN BETTER!” David RW Bro. David S. Pratt Provincial Grand Master ![]()
Dear Brethren, What incredible weather we have been enjoying – The sun has been shining, and the Spring flowers are already showing well in our garden. Light, warmth and lustre! It feels as if the sun has been shining on us all Brethren - February has been a wonderful Masonic Month! Updates on Objectives: Increasing Membership The Membership Pathway - From Planning to Implementation!
The fundamental requirement Brethren is the quality of Candidates and not just the numbers. Our Order can only be enriched by the admission new Members of integrity and of the right calibre who will add value to our Lodges. If there is any doubt about a potential Candidate? – Just say: “Thank-you but No!” Need More Ideas? Wonderful feedback has been received about a presentation delivered by our Provincial Information Officer, W Bro. David Simister, PProvSGW, on “Marketing your Lodge”. This is a subject that fits brilliantly into any plan to increase Lodge Membership. I am particularly looking forward to attending something new! - A Breakfast Meeting in Harrogate organised by W Bro. David for Brethren and also for potential candidates. This is just the sort of innovative activity to educate, entertain, enthuse and to attract! New Lodge at Garforth? Proposing to Meet at Garforth Golf Club. I was delighted to learn that there are now in excess of 40 Petitioners and this is very encouraging. There are a number of organisational hurdles to get across; however personally; I see no reason why this Lodge should not be brought into existence. No news yet about a Consecration date or venue however as it will indeed be a rare event in current times, a goodly number in attendance can be expected. Well done to the Organising Committee! Things are really shaping up well! As a general principle, I am always open to the suggestion for a new Lodge proving a strong business case supports the application. Areas in the Province where there are plans for new housing estates and growth would appear to be ripe for such new Lodges. It has also been whispered to me that a potential new “Past Masters’ Lodge” is being discussed in the South of the Province. Again, I look forward with great anticipation to reading the business case to explain the rationale for such a new Lodge that demonstrates ongoing viability. Raising our Civic Profile - Making a Difference! Civic Engagement My thanks to the Brethren who have let me have their thoughts on how to advance the achievement of this Objective. Please keep your ideas coming Brethren. Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL) Major Grants - 2019 I have the date in my diary for the meeting to consider applications and to select the recipients. It will be a pleasure to meet and greet the representatives of the successful groups at the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Harrogate on the 7th May. My thanks to W Bro. Tony Brailsford, PSGD, PAsstProvGM, who has once again volunteered to act as our Compère for this part of the meeting when Provincial Grand Lodge is Called Off. We will also be welcoming our WRMCL Care & Support Officers on stage to applaud their invaluable contribution to the ongoing well-being of our Province. Their tireless efforts are much appreciated by all. Enough is Enough! No Longer Will We; “Turn the Other Cheek!” Last month, I referred to an article written by a provocative local Journalist containing an unpleasant and inaccurate comment about Freemasonry. As expected, there has been no response to my invitation to him to meet with me to discuss the reality of Freemasonry in the 21st Century. I did chuckle when he referred to me as the “Grand Pooh-Bah” in his online response to my letter. Area 4 Gala Dinner: The 2019 Dinner and Dance held at the Magna Centre at Rotherham was a memorable evening of pleasure in great company. The attendance of the Mayor of Barnsley accompanied by the Lady Mayoress added lustre to a splendid occasion. Once again, WRMCL made a generous donation of £2,500 to the Mayor’s Charities of his year for a local Hospice and a Dementia Charity. Really well done to the organisers! Enhancing Member Experiences 2018 Initiates’ Evenings All six events have been now arranged in March around the Province and bookings are being accepted. Idea! Why not support your new members by joining them and their families at the event to celebrate their admission into Freemasonry in 2018. The event on Friday, 15th March at Castle Grove, Leeds will also include the investiture of a number of Past Provincial Grand Stewards. SOLOMON – The Masonic Learning System Update: Please Sample the Delights! The numbers of registered users are growing and include Brethren of all ages and from all parts of the Globe including other Constitutions. It is particularly interesting to note that a number of Ladies have also registered and this is further evidence of our approach to openness and of sharing knowledge. I can only continue to encourage all to register and sample this truly excellent member benefit. 50th Jubilee Certificate Presentation - Welcome Lodge No: 3779, Sheffield It was my pleasure to present our own VW Bro. Jack Pigott, PGSwdB, PDepProvGM, with his Jubilee Certificate at a very well attended meeting. A really good time was had by all! Closure Meeting, Temple Lodge No: 4963, Howarth This happened as scheduled when the existence of the Lodge and contribution to Freemasonry was celebrated. I am so pleased that virtually all of the members of the former Lodge are now happy in other Lodges and that the arrangements to provide continuing support to Lodge widows and dependants are well in place. As I said at the meeting, there is almost as much work to be done when a Lodge closes as for a Consecration. My thanks to all the Brethren who laboured so well to achieve an efficient and dignified Lodge closure. 2019/20 Area Visits by Acting Provincial Officers I invite all the Brethren to assist in this matter. My Assistant Provincial Grand Masters will recommend to me where to visit with my Team of 2019/20 Acting Officers. If you would like your Lodge to be considered for a visit, please do make it known to your Liaison Officer. An important point is that there are no costs involved for any Lodge selected for such a visit. Centenaries on the Horizon! Following the end of “The Great War” in 1918, a significant number of new Lodges were formed throughout the Constitution to accommodate a rapid increase of membership by returning Servicemen. Those Lodges are now planning to celebrate their Centenaries. A wonderful milestone and cause for much celebration! We have a goodly number of Lodges scheduled to celebrate their Centenaries in our Province over the next few years. All the Rulers and other senior Provincial Officers are looking forward to participating in the celebrations to make the occasions very special.
Just in case you are passing .... Off to Madeira for a Ladies Night and to conduct a Third Degree Ceremony! (Yes! This Provincial Grand Master can still execute the work!) My love and very best wishes to you and yours as always. “2018 Was Good - 2019 Will Be EVEN BETTER!” David RW Bro. David S. Pratt Provincial Grand Master ![]()

It is the end of the year and the time for reflection, celebration and anticipation.
My wish is for all my Brethren and their loved ones to enjoy a happy and peaceful Festive Season. May great joy be with you all as we enjoy the Festive Season and consider the year ahead.

The Membership Pathway - Early Successes Reported
Following the delivery of the Workshops, I am now being told of some great work being undertaken by Lodges!
Yes, we all know that ultimately each Lodge must take action as appropriate to their own circumstances and that there is no magic solution other than planned and applied effort.
Last month I mentioned that I am seeking to target the untapped potential of new population growth areas in the Province. Now I am ever the optimist and am delighted to have been informed that one or even two new Lodges may be established in these new areas.
That will be wonderful! So there can be no doubt, I am always pleased to consider a Petition for a new Lodge providing that there is a sound business case and that Candidates have been identified. New Lodges? Old Lodges? It is always a shame for a Lodge to close and to return its Warrant. However, these things happen for many reasons. History has shown that enterprises come and go and there is always room for the new at the same time acknowledging the superb work undertaken by Lodges that have decided to close.
Raising our Civic Profile - Making a Difference!
Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGM’s Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL)
Two splendid additional donations and “Business as Usual” demonstrating that generosity is at the core of Freemasonry:
Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA)WRMCL have agreed on a donation of £20,000 for a pair of night vision goggles for YAA. This will enable the helicopters to operate during the hours of darkness. How Much! Yes, Brethren that’s what it costs, and I am always struck when I see the cost of even the smallest part of a helicopter. Still, it’s a price well worth paying to keep this fantastic voluntary service to the Community operational.
Bradford University
The University received a major grant in 2018 for equipment for cancer research.
WRMCL has now approved a supplementary grant to provide an accessory to upgrade the equipment to perform even quicker.
Minor Grants - Business as Usual
The details of the latest round of minor grants from the PGM’s Fund have been published showing a healthy and eclectic mix of worthy causes supported in our own local Communities.
These grants make such a difference, and I appeal to all Lodges (and Chapters) to look hard locally to seek out worthy causes for consideration of a grant from the PGM’s Fund.
Enhancing Member Experiences
Provincial Office - Great Work!
I am placing on record my appreciation of our Team in the Provincial Office for all their hard work during 2018. It has not been an easy year with personnel changes and also internal promotions. Well Done Team! You have kept the ship steady, and your efforts are appreciated by all of us!
SOLOMON - The Masonic Learning System
I do hope that Brethren have registered on the SOLOMON System?
There are many stimulating information packages contained therein.
You may have already read the excellent introductory article in the recent edition of “Freemasonry Today”
The Provincial Learning & Development Team is now considering how best to include SOLOMON into our well respected Provincial Programme of “Masonic Light”.
Defibrillators - Vigilance Please!
It is just great to have defibrillators in Masonic Buildings however such equipment must be maintained. My appeal to every Brother is just to take a look at the maintenance record when you pass any defibrillator and to report any issues to the local management.
Raffles - Clarification of Proceeds Recipient
I have noted an increasing trend to introduce raffles at Festive Boards with the phrase: “For Masonic Charity”. This description alone is not sufficient to identify the intended recipient.
The details of the intended recipient must be made perfectly clear as it is the prerogative of any Brother not to participate in a raffle and this information a will ensure that an informed personal decision can be made to purchase tickets or otherwise.
Grand Secretary/CEO’s Address at the December Communication of Grand Lodge
This was genuinely inspirational demonstrating the clear vision of Grand Lodge in respect of the future of Freemasonry and especially the enhanced use of technology to make things simpler regarding administration.
And Finally: Reflections on my December Diary
Installation Meeting, St. Laurence Lodge, Pudsey No: 2330
Yet another wonderful occasion in good company. I congratulate all concerned.
Closure Meeting, Lodge of Thanksgiving, Leeds No: 6212
A “Sad/Happy” occasion as always when a Lodge closes and returns the Warrant.
The productive work undertaken by the Lodge that was founded by Brethren in thanks to God for the end of the terrible Word War 2 was celebrated in style.
My Fraternal & Festive Greetings and Regards to you and all your loved ones!

November - What a wonderful month with so many things happening and beginning to happen!
Monthly Mailing to Lodges/My Monthly Blog
Following overwhelming requests, my Monthly Blog will be once again be included in the Monthly Mailing to Lodges as well as appearing on the Provincial Website.
I have been moved by the many positive comments concerning my Blog that have certainly alleviated my worries about “too many attachments” being included for Brethren with the Monthly Mailing to Lodges. A Lodge Secretary summed things up with the comment that “If Brethren do not wish to read all the attachments then they do not have to!”
Another told me: “We are now receiving quality communications from the Province and that did not happen years ago. The Members really appreciate being kept up to date”. That’s progress!”
My thanks to all Lodge Secretaries who pass on the Monthly Mailing to their members so promptly. This is but one way of ensuring that Brethren who are unable to attend meetings are kept informed and feel part of our Masonic Family. I am pleased to report each month I receive my personal copy from my own Lodges within minutes of the email being sent out by the Provincial Office.
Our Brethren really do appreciate being kept informed. How do I know? They tell me!
A summary of the feedback provided to me confirms that you cannot please everyone all of the time. As with everything in Freemasonry, there are so many appropriate words contained within our ceremonial. I am reminded of those wonderful words from the Ancient Charge concerning cheerful acquiesce.
Increasing Membership - Working Plan for Success
The Membership Pathway - Further Proof of Success
The feedback received from the launch events has been very positive. The enthusiastic reception by Lodge Representatives in attendance has been inspirational. I am indeed grateful to our Membership Team and the Provincial Stewards’ Company for planning and delivering the events.
Some Lodges opted not to attend the events? Following the success of the launch, I repeat the invitation - Any Lodge that did not attend might now be having second thoughts about embracing the positive solutions contained in the Membership Pathway. W Bro. Andy Brown, PAsstGStdB, our Provincial Membership Officer and his Team stand ready to assist.
Membership Pathway news from other Provinces – The three Pilot Provinces report continued increased membership and also continued increased retrieval of Members.
Other Provinces that are a little ahead of us in the implementation are seeing immediate positive results. This tells me that the Membership Pathway works.
Planning ahead with an eye on the experiences of the past – It is interesting to see how the location of the populations changes over the years. Sometimes the shifting population demographic leaves Masonic Halls and Lodges on the “wrong side of the tracks” or in the wrong part of town with reduced access to potential Candidates. I have asked our Membership Team in conjunction with our Communications Team to look at our Province to identify where new estates and houses are being built. We will be making contact with the new residents to raise awareness about Freemasonry and to look for suitable Candidates.
I predict that this will mean the need for Lodges in new parts of the Province – Let’s see?
So there can be no doubt – Yes, I am looking to increase our Membership but only with men of the right character and calibre.
Raising our Civic Profile - Always Looking to “Be There.”
Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (PGMs Fund) & West Riding Masonic Charities Ltd. (WRMCL)
Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) - Donation
Our Annual trip to the YAA Base at Nostell Priory was another pleasant occasion where we were again really welcomed by the YAA staff.
This was a “Yorkshire United” visit by the Provinces of Yorkshire, West Riding and Yorkshire North & East Ridings. Donations from the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) together with a generous donation from WRMCL were presented. The reality is that our donations keep one helicopter in the air for only one day of operation. It is expensive but what a magnificent service funded entirely by donations. The Chief Pilot is the Master of a York Lodge and that in greeting him well as Brothers, we all hoped that we would not have to meet him professionally!
Our Square and Compasses emblem looked resplendent on the helicopter fuselage.
Castleford Marine Cadets - Donation
The donation of £2,000 from the PGMs Fund will mean that this new Unit for young people will now have the right equipment to become fully functional. I attended a Parade at the temporary Headquarters and was delighted to see such well-presented and keen young citizens. It was a first for me when I was invited to inspect the Guard!
Remembrance Day - An Opportunity to Honour the Fallen
The reports and photographs in the “White Rose Magazine” show Freemasonry engaged fully in our Communities. I did not mind getting soaked to the skin as we stood in silent tribute to fallen heroes at the Leeds Parade. As the rain dripped from my head I reflected – This is nothing compared with standing in a mud-filled trench and in constant fear of death experienced by the gallant soldiers in the First World War.
I pay tribute to our Webmaster for such a wonderful temporary Home Page on our Provincial Website concerning Remembrance Day illustrating the debt that we owe to previous generations.
Defibrillators - A Serious Note for Monitoring Please
As I perambulate the Province, it is very reassuring to see defibrillators in Masonic premises. This life-saving equipment is fast becoming a fixture in many public places, and the PGMs Fund has provided many defibrillators in Communities throughout the Province.
The concern is that this equipment is not being maintained with new batteries and disposables at due times. This could mean that at the very moment that the defibrillator is needed that it will not function correctly with predictable consequences.
Could I ask every Brother to check the defibrillators to which they have access? A record should be shown on the equipment to confirm battery replacement date and the expiry dates of the disposables, e.g. the pads and paddles. If necessary, a word with the owners/custodians of those responsible for the equipment should prompt corrective action.
Community Sponsorship - Something to Consider?
It is great that some Lodges have sponsored prizes for Schools and Universities.
We have now been approached by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme to consider sponsorship for individual excellence of personal achievement. This is currently under active consideration as is the possibility of creating Annual “Freemasonry Community Awards” for such things as literature and citizenship. It is early days, so I am looking for ideas Brethren.
Enhancing Member Experiences
Provincial Office Hours
I arranged for a review of working practices in our Provincial Office, and the results have led me to approve a change in the hours for access by the Public (and that includes us Brethren). The Monthly Mailing confirms the revised hours and the reason behind this change reflects the increasing Legal and Regulatory demands impacting on every Organisation – commercial or social. The Office Team need dedicated time to attend to such matters including the uninterrupted input of essential data.
White Rose Magazine - Autumn 2018 Edition
Another magnificent edition of a publication that is enjoyed and highly respected all over the Masonic World. Well done to W Bro. Peter Doherty, PPJGW, and Team - A real credit to the Province!
Can you help? I know that W Bro. Peter would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to become involved.
Assistant Provincial Grand Masters-designate - Installations
W Bro. Dr Andrew Wright, PAGDC and W Bro. Ian Lewis, PAGDC are scheduled to be installed respectively on the 16th and 24th of January 2019 at Otley and Leeds.
Bawtry Lodge N: 5174 - New Banner Dedication
It is a rare opportunity to dedicate a Banner, and my visit to Bawtry was a delight. It was so good to see the newer members of the Lodge forming the Banner Escort with the full support of the more senior members. Such inclusivity is to be congratulated and encouraged.
As no-one in the Lodge had seen a Banner dedication before, I can safely say that the ritual was perfect!
SOLOMON - The Masonic Learning System is Now Live!
“A Daily Advancement in Masonic Knowledge” – I heard that somewhere!
Do look to see what is on this excellent electronic system. There is something for everyone.
Prestonian Lecture 2019 - To Be Delivered in our Province
The Leeds Lodge of Installed Masters No: 7981 meeting at Castle Grove, Leeds has been honoured to have been selected as a Lodge where the 2019 Prestonian Lecture will be delivered. A date for your diary: Thursday, 19th September 2019.
Young Masons’ Clubs
There are now a number of such Clubs meeting across the Province. This social dimension of Freemasonry is important. An invitation to attend extended to prospective members is yet another method of raising awareness. If anyone would like to know more – Do have a word with your Lodge Liaison Officer.
Brighouse Garden & Patio
What a pleasure it was to have been invited to attend the opening of the new garden and patio at Brighouse Assembly Rooms. The “Before” and “After” pictures show the enormous physical efforts undertaken by the Ladies of the Lodges to create a lovely area. I can just see golden evenings and moonlight moments where there will be music and merriment.
The Church and Freemasonry - Lecture – 13th December 2018 - Leeds
I am most grateful to the Brethren who alerted me to this Lecture.
If anyone is interested in attending –CLICK THIS LINK
I have discussed the matter with the Grand Secretary and also with the Chair of the Grand Lodge Theological Group who tell me that the Lecturer is known to us and that subject matter is likely to be contentious. I have had no response to my invitation to the Lecturer to contact me for any information about Freemasonry. I know that many Brethren intend to join me in the audience. We will be there to listen politely and to correct any factual errors in a gentlemanly manner.
And Finally: Reflections on my November Diary
Provincial Grand Chapter - Bradford
I can confirm that the Token confirming the “indissoluble link” between the Craft and Royal Arch Masonry was duly passed into my safekeeping by our MEGSupt, EComp, Stewart Carley. This Token will, of course, be passed back at the meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Harrogate next May. The Provincial Grand Chapter meeting was tremendous with a record number of Companions in attendance - I was lucky to get a seat!
Well done indeed to the Royal Arch Team of Rulers and all of the Companions!
2018/19 Acting Provincial Officers - Team Visit to Harrogate
Well, we went to Harrogate and what another splendid visit in excellent company.
The smiling faces and laughter indicated that everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
The processions looked really smart and certainly impressed the Brethren who rarely see the Team “On Duty”. How do I know? They told me!
The situation at Knaresborough Masonic Hall with the new Fire Regulations would have restricted the numbers attending so severely that the switch to Harrogate was necessary.
My grateful thanks to the Master, Wardens and Brethren members of Doric Lodge for accommodating us so willingly and at short notice.
I have not forgotten Forest of Knaresborough Lodge, and I will be visiting the Lodge in January 2019 with a small contingent of Acting Officers
Installation Meeting, Cockburn Lodge No: 5362
Excellent in every respect! Such a vibrant and happy Lodge where high standards are expected and delivered. Thank-you Cockburn Lodge.
Friends of Connaught Court - AGM
A good attendance to hear about the support being provided to Residents and the 2019 Fete. It is always interesting to have confirmed that the Residents continue to enjoy their sherry! Good on them!
Our Masonic Family - Consecration of a new Knights Templar Preceptory
I attended the splendid Consecration Ceremony at Castle Grove, Leeds to celebrate the arrival of a new Member of our West Riding Masonic Family. Every success at your home in Pontefract Brother Knights!
Masonry Universal: Britannic Lodge of Madeira No: 134, Funchal
Thank you to all the Brethren who enquired about the Ladies Night on Saturday; the 30th of March 2019. Please keep in touch regarding your travel and accommodation plans.
I will be happy to provide advice.
My Fraternal Greetings and Regards to you and yours!

Increasing Membership - Working Plan for Success
The Membership Pathway - A Proven Guide to Success
The Schedule of presentations is now in circulation. Attendance is highly recommended however no “three-line whip” to attend has been issued on this matter. As with every Provincial activity, participation is entirely voluntary. Rulers will be in attendance at the Events, and everyone is invited to spend time with a Ruler during the evening. Why bother? The experiences of the Provinces involved in the pilot? “Membership Pathway? It works”. All Sections of the Pathway are impressive, and I do commend the practical ideas on member retrieval.
Open Days - Continued Success
I have received positive feedback regarding the second Open Day in the Community organised by the Sheffield Lodges. This confirms the effectiveness of looking outside our own Masonic Buildings to engage with potential Candidates and also the general public. I now look to Lodges in every Masonic Centre to discuss how to work together to host local Open Days both in the Community and also at Masonic Centres.
Our aim must continue to be: The “right” man for the “right” Lodge.
I am particularly impressed with the calibre of members being admitted recently.
They all have friends and colleagues and with some early encouragement can be a tremendous source of even more new members.
Raising our Civic Profile - Things are Happening!
Provincial Grand Master’s Fund/WRMCL
Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA)
The Province was well represented in Sheffield at the Annual Award Dinner of YAA.
It was humbling to hear about the life-saving work of the YAA and a delight to learn that the service now operates from 7am until Midnight. This has been made possible by the building of night landing pads at Hospitals, specialist pilot training and night vision goggles. I nearly fell off my chair when I was told that the cost of each set of the essential night vision goggles is in the region of £22,000.
Harrogate
Harrogate Lodges have been particularly active.
A tree arbour including an elegantly designed oak bench has been donated to the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens at Harlow Carr. Included in the donation was a specially made information board including braille characters for visually impaired visitors.
The Deputy Lieutenant, the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Harrogate together with many other Civic and Masonic dignitaries, were in attendance. The Gardens Superintendent was much surprised when an acacia tree was requested for incorporation into the arbour.
Much to the delight of the Brethren a suitable hardy variety was obtained and planted.
The “Mason Room” at Harrogate Hospital has been formally handed over in the presence of many Hospital Staff and Brethren. This project was funded by a Major Grant Award allowing the complete refurbishment of a room for the quiet enjoyment and benefit of patients and their relatives. It is a fully equipped haven of tranquillity. The redecoration includes mood lighting showing blue skies and clouds in the ceiling to provide the impression of freedom and space. The Hospital Staff were delighted by our generosity who confirmed that this “makes a difference!” The first user of the room took up residence within minutes of the conclusion of the handover ceremony.
Remembrance Day
I understand that 1000 ties have now been sold. This is a magnificent achievement reflecting the qualities at the core of every Freemason. The final details of our participation at the Leeds Remembrance Sunday Parade will be circulated.
Enhancing Member Experiences
New Assistant Provincial Grand Masters Announced
W Bro. Dr Andrew Wright, PAGDC, will succeed W Bro. Paul Clarke, PSGD and W Bro. Ian Lewis, PAGDC will succeed W Bro, Anthony Llewellyn, PSGD as Assistant Provincial Grand Masters.
I do thank W Bros. Clarke and Llewellyn for their outstanding support, dedication and hard work as both Rulers in the Province and also as personal and valued friends.
Details of the Installation Meetings in January 2019 will be confirmed and circulated.
SOLOMON
This is an initiative soon to be released by Grand Lodge. An electronic interactive learning and development system to enhance our Masonic experience. We have been blessed over the years by the availability of excellent local Learning & Development initiatives and support. SOLOMON will provide support to Provinces and our Districts Overseas with Masonic Education. The new repository of information will be an excellent addition to our own local resources.
Do watch this space for details of the release and access.
Our Masonic Family
I have been invited to attend the Annual meeting of the Provincial Priory of Knights Templar at Leeds. My thanks to the Provincial Prior, REKt. Paul Grafton for the courtesy extended. As members of other Masonic Orders must of necessity to members of the Craft, it is lovely to meet my Brethren in different settings.
And Finally: Reflections on my October Diary
I have finally, finally retired after nearly 30 years with the “World’s No: 1 Building Society” (as we were once called!) If you examine my DNA then there is probably a blue “X” in there somewhere together with The Square and Compasses!
Installation Meeting, Royal Wharfedale Lodge No: 1108
A splendid evening in good company with a good attendance. An excellent Festive Board. Well done to all in the Lodge
Masonry Universal (1): An Exotic Visitor: A Past Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand East of the Netherlands came to Sheffield accompanied by a goodly entourage of Dutch Masons. It was a delightful evening at University Lodge, Sheffield No: 3911 where we were treated to a splendid Ceremony of Making a Mason. Other overseas visitors from the Grand Lodge of New South Wales and from our own District of Bahamas and Turks were also in attendance. I can only admire Brethren whose Mother tongue is not English delivering our ceremonial in such an excellent manner. This leads on to………….
Masonry Universal (2): An Exotic Visit: Well! I have been installed as Worshipful Master of the Britannic Lodge of Madeira No: 135 in Funchal under the Legal Grand Lodge of Portugal. Thank-goodness! The Lodge works in English. There will be a Ladies Night on Saturday; the 30th of March 2019 should anyone be in Madeira on that date.
On the November Horizon: - Presentations from the ProvGM’s Fund/WRMCL at Brighouse, Castleford and Nostell Priory. Cockburn Lodge No: 5362 Installation. New Banner Dedication at Bawtry Lodge No: 5174. AGM of the Association of Friends of Connaught Court. Team visit to Harrogate. Provincial Meetings- East Lancashire and Northumberland

Dear Brethren,
It is now deep into September and how the year moves on apace.
Weather conditions from roasting sunshine to torrential rain in the same month.
We even had the central heating on yesterday and frost on the car!
How things change!
September has been a really interesting month with plenty of things happening.
As a trial, my Monthly Message will be appearing on the Website only. This is to limit the volume of information attached to the Monthly Mailings to Lodges. It would, however, be wrong to ignore the ever-growing hunger for information shown by our newer Members.
As a passionate communicator myself, it is interesting to remember that once there was the challenge from some Brethren that “We don’t know what is going on!”
How different things were in the past! Over the years, our Website, Monthly Mailings, White Rose Magazine, Social Media, Liaison Officers have all been introduced and developed to provide information and to enhance communication with every Brother.
Yes indeed - Things do change!
Many thanks to all that have contacted me thanking me for the clarity of the three specific Provincial Objectives dovetailing into the UGLE Strategy so, as requested, here is a brief update:
Increasing Membership
The Membership Pathway - The Schedule of presentations is about to be published. Attendance by any Lodge or Individual Brother is invited however participation is by choice. As I said in my previous Monthly message – If your own Lodge is failing or you would like to attract additional members then: “Membership Pathway? It works”.
Open Days - The Open Day in Sheffield City Centre was a tremendous success.
My thanks go to the Sheffield Brethren for trialling a new approach. I do encourage every Brother to seize any appropriate opportunity to raise the profile of Freemasonry, increase awareness and to shatter false myths often associated with our wonderful Order.
The series of Open Days at Castleford have been equally well received by the Community, and at least two potential candidates have been the result.
As promised, I am pleased to report that further Provincial financial support has been approved to Centres and Lodges to optimise the impact Open Days.
Raising our Civic Profile
Provincial Grand Master’s Fund/WRMCL– There are some lovely examples of Freemasonry in the Community “In action” in the recent grant allocations.
Here is my special request - Surprisingly, very few Lodges make applications for grants.
I do find this strange and would ask every Brother to look hard within their local communities.
The Provincial Website gives details of what would be considered for support.
The critical question to remember: “Will it make a difference?”
Remembrance Day - Plans for our participation at the Leeds Parade are progressing. Please watch out for further information. I would like a strong turnout should any Brother wish to join me. How pleasing it was to learn that the sale of the optional ties has now exceeded 600. Thank-you Brethren.
Bradford University - A major ProvGM’s Fund grant of over £30,000 was awarded to purchase cancer research equipment to examine individual cells. A Provincial deputation was greeted warmly at the University when the new equipment was demonstrated with passion. This equipment will make a significant contribution in the fight to beat cancer.
Enhancing Member Experiences
I would like to start with a really important point. Participation in any Provincial activity is a matter of personal choice. I am aware of some Brethren who wish only to attend their Lodge meetings and then to enjoy a hearty meal in good company and that’s all.
Other Brethren seek for more. All Brethren are important to me.
Attendance of the Grand Lodge Quarterly Communication
I would like to express my thanks to all who accompanied me to support the meeting of our Grand Lodge. It is important that our Province is well-represented in London.
This is always a special day, and I do encourage qualified Brethren to attend Grand Lodge to enjoy the experience. Master Masons are very welcome to attend by prior arrangement.
Second Team Outing for the 2018/2018 Acting Officers - The Lodge of Eccleshill, Faith and Fraternity No: 1034 welcomed the Team in a packed Lodge Room at Hoyle Court, Baildon. Another splendid occasion enjoyed by all. At the meeting, I promoted W Bro. James Steel to the rank of PPSGW. Such a promotion on the floor of a Lodge is always a special moment at any meeting and is always richly deserved by the recipient.
Our New Provincial Website - Launched with acclamation! Well done Team!
Please do submit articles Brethren as a Website can only remain vibrant with News.
Charity Matters: WRMCL/C.H.O.I.C.E.S. - I was delighted to hear that C.H.O.I.C.E.S. continues to be really appreciated by our Brethren in need and their dependents. Feedback on the services provided indicates a very high satisfaction level regarding the quality of the work undertaken. We are all very proud of WRMCL and a note to newer Brethren.
Please ask your Charity Steward for the form to become a member of WRMCL.
Want to know more about WRMCL/C.H.O.I.C.E.S.? Our Provincial Website will reveal all!
Provincial Honours 2019 - The new electronic system is working brilliantly with a 100% return rate from Lodges. This is a much-appreciated improvement. In the past, delays using a paper-based system resulted in some forms being submitted well after the due dates and delaying the process. Thank-you Brother Secretaries.
Just a reminder from me - If you think that you are due for consideration for either first appointment or promotion in this Provincial Grand Lodge, would you please check with your Lodge Secretary and Liaison Officer? This is particularly important for Brethren who have joined Lodges in this Province from elsewhere.
My objective is never to overlook any Brother who is qualified for consideration.
Some Personal Musings to close September
My visit with other Rulers to Carlisle to witness the Installation of the new Provincial Grand Master of Cumberland & Westmorland was a delight. The Deputy Grand Master performed the ceremony with great style and much appreciated by all in attendance.
Supported by a deputation from the current Team of Acting Officers, I had the pleasure of attending the national meeting of the Kindred Lodges Association (KLA) held under the Banner of Pathfinder Lodge No: 8236 at Sheffield. What a very happy occasion! The KLA is formed by Lodges with links to Youth Organisations such as Scouting and the Boys Brigade.
On the horizon, I will be attending a Meeting of Universities Lodge, Sheffield No: 3911 to meet and greet a Past Grand Master of the Netherlands Constitution. I also have a number of Lodge Installation Meetings in my diary and also a variety of Charity presentations ranging from Yorkshire Air Ambulance to the RHS Garden at Harlow Carr.
When I am out and about, please do feel free to come and talk with me to share your successes and even your sorrows. I do try to meet everyone at meetings, and one thing that is noticeable is that younger members seem to be uninhibited about talking with me.
Not all, but some of our more mature and experienced Brethren seem to be a little reluctant to approach me? Perhaps it is a legacy from a bygone era when Provincial Grand Masters were kept apart from the Brethren?
As I say to nervous Masters and Brethren when they meet me for the first time:
“I greet you first as a Brother and now as Provincial Grand Master.”
What greater honour can there be than being a Free and Accepted Mason and a Brother?
2018 - Best Year Ever!
As ever, my Fraternal Regards and My Very Best Wishes to All,
David
Right Worshipful Brother David S. Pratt - Provincial Grand Master

My Beloved Brethren,
Increasing Membership * Raising our Civic Profile * Enhancing Member Experiences
You will know that I have set these three specific Objectives for this Province that dovetails beautifully into the UGLE Strategy:
Increasing Membership
It is tremendous to see some of our Lodges being successful with an abundance of candidates. Well Done! We all need to share the best practice of success and to plan how to maintain the interest of all new members through Mentorship, education and involvement.
The Membership Pathway - Proven Solutions & All in one place!
The plans to provide briefings and support to Lodges are in final preparation.
WBro. Andy Brown, PAsstGStdB, our Provincial Membership Officer and Team will be delivering presentations around the Province. The Membership Pathway? It works!
My thoughts? I am not interested in having any “targets” as I only want to attract quality candidates of the right calibre. Just think! If every Lodge in our Province admitted just two new members, then that would mean an overall membership increase of nearly 400!
Three new members would nudge an increase of nearly 600!
Now wouldn’t that be tremendous?
I do firmly believe that there are literally many thousands of suitable candidates “out there”.
Our challenge is to make contact and to show them just how much that they would enjoy by joining our ranks.
We will assist, motivate and support Lodges with guidance, enthusiasm and tangible ideas.
There is no intention to attract new members for Lodges centrally as I need individual Lodges to seize the initiative. If however, a Lodge does not wish to do anything and just wait for a miracle to happen then there is not much can be done.
Considering the predictable consequences of such inaction will be important.
As the Bard put it – “Nothing will come of nothing!” (King Lear, Act 1)
I need all of our members to feel empowered and confident in being pro-active in asking suitable family members, colleagues and friends to join their Lodges.
As this may be a new approach for some, some Brethren may feel uncomfortable initially.
I have asked W Bro. Andy and his Team to cover this specifically during the Briefings to show how the “Best” do this successfully and comfortably.
Looking for initial discussion points within your own Lodge to start the process?
“What is the profile and culture of our Lodge? Why should anyone want to join our Lodge?”
Open Days - Demonstrating to the World the beneficial effects of Freemasonry
I am encouraging different types of Open Days: Awareness events in City Centres and Lodge/Building Open Days for prospective candidates. Provincial financial support needed? Please discuss this with your Liaison Officer and Assistant Provincial Grand Master.
Raising our Civic Profile.
Yorkshire Day - Ripon - 1st of August
We were there again - Among many Civic Leaders and with an increased contingent!
A splendid day at Ripon and so well organised by Ripon Council and the Yorkshire Society.
There is something tremendously uplifting to march behind a military band.
“Yorkshire Freemasons United“- Together with my counterpart and friend from the North & East Province, RWBro. Jeff Gillyon, we marched with our Brethren through the City in the procession to the Service of Celebration at Ripon Cathedral.
The 2019 celebration will be held in Whitby, and we shall be there again and in force!
Why not come and join the Masonic contingent with your wife/partner, families and friends?
Provincial Grand Master’s Fund
It is a delight to see the press coverage when presentations are made to the worthy recipients. More, please! The community impact of our donations is enormous, and the generosity of Freemasons is always appreciated. Let’s choose to make a difference.
Remembrance Day
I was delighted to be informed that over 400 of the special ties have now been purchased by Brethren. Please accept my sincere thanks. As we wear the ties during the month of November, it will be a fitting and discreet tribute to all those who have made the supreme sacrifice during times of conflict.

Three “Masonic” Mayors
I have written to three of our Brethren who have attained the distinction of becoming Mayors this year. We are all very proud of any Brother who becomes a “First Citizen”.
Enhancing Member Experiences
As a “Member” Organisation, I would like every Brother to derive the greatest of personal satisfaction and enjoyment from being a Freemason. I am always looking for ideas and encourage every Brother to give suggestions - both within your own Lodge and also for Province-wide.
Company of Provincial Grand Stewards
I was inspired as I watched proceedings at the inaugural meeting held at Castleford Masonic Hall on the 20th of August. Positive energy and enthusiasm abounded with the objective of providing support for Provincial Projects and Initiatives. History was made! Congratulations to WBro. John Williams, PProvGStwd who was elected as the first ever Chairman of the Company. I have thrown down the gauntlet for the Company to “make a difference” and based on the motivation exhibited at the meeting, I am sure that the response will be positive. You will see members of “The Company” supporting such activities as the cascade of the “Membership Pathway” and Remembrance Day Parades. The “2019 Provincial Quiz” is under the banner of this band of Brothers, and following the outstanding success of the 2018 Quiz, great things are anticipated for 2019. Watch this space!
First Team Outing for the 2018/2018 Acting Officers
Well, we went to Boothferry Lodge in Goole and had a great evening!
“Oh, what a Night! What an Atmosphere!” An absolutely brilliant first Team outing of the year. We witnessed with pleasure the delivery of a tremendous Third Degree ceremony that was enjoyed and appreciated by all. An excellent standard of ritual and clearly the product of hard work, dedication and rehearsal. Out thanks to the Master, Warden and Brethren.
It was wonderful to hear the buzz of conversation at the Festive Board – Great Team bonding. My especial thanks to my Provincial Grand Stewards for getting stuck in to assist with serving and also clearing the tables. “Here’s to the next time Team!”
Our New Provincial Website
This Project is coming to fruition, and all seems “good to go” as scheduled. This is great news!
I want to thank Lodges for supplying our Webmaster with examples of their Lodge badges/emblems for the Website. We live in a visual age, and such illustrations add interest and enhance the on-screen presentation. More, please!
Electronic Provincial Honours System
First indications are very positive. We already have had forms submitted at a much higher response rate than the former manual system.
UGLE League Table - Media Coverage
No: 1 on the UGLE League Table - Again! This is not luck but down to really hard work by W Bro. David Simister, PProvSGW our Provincial Information Officer and the Team.
I would like every Brother to feel confident to talk about Freemasonry in any setting and especially if with the Media. I have asked the Provincial Education Team to conduct some research to see if there is an appetite for providing support learning activities for Members.
The trained members of the Provincial Communications Committee stand ready to assist with advice and guidance should any Brother needing urgent support.
Dealing with the Media? Always best to get it right - first time!
Installation Panel Briefing - Batley
Many Brethren look at September as the start of the new Masonic season.
It’s true that several Lodges meet every month of the year and never have a close season. For me, the Briefing Meeting for my Installation Panel Members heralds the start of the new Masonic season and focusses the mind on our successes and current issues.
How times have changed! Masonic news and information are now more readily available than ever before and available almost instantaneously. The important role of my Installation Representatives continues – For the night of an Installation when one of my Representatives attends, they are the most senior Provincial Representative. All are carefully selected and are both knowledgeable and approachable. I would ask every Brother to listen carefully to their comments at the Festive Board. There is no set script, and each Representative is empowered to shape the content of his message as appropriate for the audience and for that moment in time. Together with Lodge Liaison Offers, my Representatives provide a vital conduit for information to flow between the Province and Lodges. I am always most interested to read the Reports regarding Installation Meetings. Reported standards of conduct and ceremonial continue to provide satisfaction, and if there is ever a situation revealed, this allows resources to be allocated to provide appropriate and timely support.

Your Province is calling
Confirming that will have seen the request for volunteers to join the Provincial Professional Register:
1. Provincial Grand Treasurer
2. HR Generalists - Ideally CIPD Qualified or similar
Please do not be shy! These are golden opportunities to be seized and enjoyed!
I cannot promise that every volunteer will be asked to become involved however I will try to involve as many as possible in Provincial activities as required.
Provincial Office - Staff Changes
We are all saddened to have received the resignation of our Office Manager, Mrs Ruth Waythe. We will all miss that cheery Welsh voice on the telephone.
Thank-you Ruth for your service that has been most appreciated over the years.
We all wish you every success in your future career. It will be a challenge to replace you.
As a result of receiving the resignation, the need to move quickly has been paramount.
The Office Manager vacancy details have been circulated, and a recruitment and selection schedule agreed. It is anticipated that there is likely to be a resource gap until the Office Manager vacancy is filled. I would ask Brethren to carefully consider if they need to contact the Provincial Office during September. Interim arrangements have been put in place to ensure that essential activities continue and I am grateful to all involved in ensuring the smooth operation of our Province.
Some Personal Musings to Close August
Masonic Stone Laying Ceremony at Ripon Cathedral - The Re-run!
There was a technical malfunction, of the camera, on the actual day of our Tercentenary Celebratory Service. It was, therefore, necessary to re-run the ceremony to record the event for posterity. With some clever “cutting and pasting”, this now appears on YouTube here
Brethren, this is really worth seeing and for sharing with family and friends.
Celebration Lunch - Retired Provincial Grand Secretary
The Rulers and Past Rulers of the Province hosted a farewell and thank-you lunch for our Past Provincial Grand Secretary, W Bro. Keith Tolan, PAGDC.
Thank-you for your service W Bro. Keith! It was a goodly turnout and a lovely occasion.
W Bro. Keith continues to serve as ProvGSE in the Royal Arch until November.
Britannic Lodge of Madeira (Regular/Legal Grand Lodge of Portugal)
My thanks to W Bro. Doug Mills, PProvSGW who has sourced some Working Tools in response to my appeal. Many thanks, W Bro. Doug!
Gratefully received, they will be faithfully applied across the water.
Now here’s a thing! On the 1st of October, I will be installed as Master of the Lodge much to my amazement! How did that happen I ask myself?!!! I said that I was happy to assist the Lodge and the next thing I knew ... Does that sound familiar Brethren?
If you happen to be in Funchal on the 1st of October - Do let me know.
You would be very welcome to attend the meeting and then to enjoy excellent Madeiran cuisine and wine at the Installation Banquet.
2018 - Best Year Ever!
Fraternal Regards and My Very Best Wishes to All,
David

Right Worshipful Brother David S. Pratt - Provincial Grand Master
My Beloved Brethren of our own wonderful Province and Families and Friends and everyone from elsewhere and also overseas who read my Monthly message.
It’s July 2018, and plenty of exciting things are happening!
(That’s in addition to the FIFA World Cup and The Championship at Wimbledon!).
Decorum Matters
I have been amazed and delighted by the number of positive comments received in support of my June comments on this subject. It does go to show just how easy it is for new practices to creep in and then to become accepted as the tradition! We all have a part to play in maintaining high standards, and I do look especially to my Grand Officers, Provincial Grand Officers and Past Masters to assist and support the Masters of their own Lodges in this matter. The solution is “More Light than Heat” please when correcting any bad habits that have crept in! Gentle guidance is always more effective than public admonition.
Volunteers - The On-going Provincial Talent Search
My personal mission to identify and harness potential and ability within our Province continues! No Past Master is ever a Past Mason, and our newest members also have specialist talents. There is always much to do - So with apologies to the famous RW Bro. Kitchener poster:

The invitation for volunteers included in the Monthly mailing to Lodges was of a non-specific nature. May I ask any Brother who is keen to respond to the invitation to hold fire as such requests will only be circulated when specific skills being sought? Of course, I cannot guarantee that every Volunteer will be called upon however willingness is always noted.
Our Provincial Grand Treasurer, W Bro. Brian Priestley, PJGD has intimated that he wishes to stand down after many years of stalwart service to the Province. Thank-you indeed W Bro. Brian for your prudent and professional stewardship of our financial affairs. W Bro. Priestley has been such a reliable Brother who has always been a source of wise counsel to me and also to my predecessors.
You will be aware that I have advertised for a successor Provincial Grand Treasurer and I take this opportunity to confirm that the current rank or age of any applicant is irrelevant. The essential attributes are professional competence and experience to be able to discharge the duties of the important Executive Office. It is likely that the Office will appeal to Past Masters and the Role Profile in circulation provides details of what is expected.
Do not be bashful! If you would like to become involved in the efficient running of our magnificent Province and its many and varied, exciting activities, please email the Province Grand Lodge Office with details of your specific skills and experience when you see something that is right up your street.
Provincial Governance
The evolution of the Governance of our Province to a “Cabinet and Council” approach is already proving beneficial. Each of the Council Functional Heads has developed the first drafts of impressive strategic and operational plans. The final versions will be published on the **NEW** Provincial Website that will be released on the 3rd of September.
The Provincial Company of Stewards
Sometimes we get it wrong! A final check of all the operational documentation and working practices revealed something! The use of the word “Board” for anything under the United Grand Lodge of England is restricted, so the name has been changed to “The Company”.
The inaugural meeting will be held in August to introduce this new and exciting support service for designated Provincial Projects.
Remembrance Day - Ties & Parades 2018
I will be delighted to provide a general dispensation for Brethren to wear regalia in Public at Remembrance Day Parades. All Brethren have my encouragement to attend as representatives of the Craft to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in time of conflict. Discretion and the weather will determine the choice of regalia to be worn if any,
I do ask Brethren not to wear their Masonic jewels as this can cause confusion to the general public can mistake Masonic Jewels for gallantry and/or service awards.
In my July Message, I introduced details of an optional special “Masonic Remembrance” tie that may be purchased and worn at Craft and Royal Arch meetings in this Province during November only. This approval extends beyond 2018 and is granted in advance for each November until further notice. The details of how to purchase this optional tie are in current circulation.
I am grateful to the Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Derbyshire who has advised me regarding this tie. My approval extends for the tie to be worn at our Meetings by visitors from outside our Province for November only. I reiterate that the wearing of this tie is optional and entirely a matter of personal choice.
Charity and Making a Difference for Families and our Communities
Personal or Family Distress? Our Provincial Confidential Helpline Number continues to provide a discreet option for communication with our Provincial Grand Almoner and his Team: 0344 902 0220. A similar Confidential Helpline Number also exists at the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) in London: 0800 035 6090. It is occasionally appropriate to remind the Brethren that we are indeed a Fraternal Organisation and no Brother or his Family should ever be in distress or in need. I ask every Brother to ensure that that wives, widows, partners and children know about Masonic Charity and what to do and who to contact in cases of distress.
Our Communities? Grants from the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund (ProvGM’s Fund) and also from the MCF continue to provide significant and very welcome support to our local Communities. Many and varied worthy local causes have been supported both big and small. One thing that continues to surprise me is that many Lodges and Chapters have never, or have rarely, applied to the ProvGM’s Fund for a grant to support a local worthy cause? I do suggest that everyone takes a look around their own communities as I am sure that additional opportunities exist to provide local support from the ProvGM’s Fund.
Provincial Honours Process - If you are due for Consideration in 2019 - Read On!
It’s goodbye to paper! A letter from the Provincial Grand Secretary has been included in the Monthly Mailing to Lodges detailing the changes to the Honours process with a move to full electronic completion and transmission.
NB: In terms of Data Protection and General Data Protection Regulations, the inclusion of such details on the documents falls within the ‘legitimate interest’ basis for the use of personal data.
It is vital to note that the Brother being considered for either First Appointment or Promotion in Provincial Grand Lodge now has the personal responsibility to complete and forward the document outlining personal contribution made to the Lodge, the Province and the wider Community. Brethren, I encourage you to be expansive and accurate on these forms by stating the facts and describing the impact of what you are doing or have done.
This does enable a consistent and objective analysis of each and every Brother under consideration.
The late RWBro. J. Trevor Broadley, one of my predecessors, captured the essence of Provincial Honours with that very apt Yorkshire saying: “You don’t get owt for nowt!”
If any Brother does not have access to electronic support there is no problem, please talk with your Liaison Officer for guidance and support as there will be an alternative solution.
Masonic Meeting Places
Our Province has the “distinction” of having the greatest number of Masonic Meeting Places.
You will know that the Masonic Meeting Places is one of the integral aspects of the UGLE Strategy for the development of Freemasonry.
The emphasis is focussed on both financial viability and quality of Member experience.
As Provincial Grand Master, I am charged with the responsibility of ensuring that each and every Masonic meeting place in this Province is fit for purpose and that I am satisfied that Lodges may continue to meet in the premises. This decision is not just based on the basic legal and regulatory requirements such as Fire, Hygiene, Health & Safety, etc.
As far as I am concerned these are givens and must always be in place to allow any building to accommodate a Lodge Meeting. My focus includes the immediate, mid-term and long-term financial viability of any Masonic Building and also upkeep, appearance, decoration and furnishing. A special consultative Team has been established to undertake the process of analysis. This Team is already performing well by offering suggestions for improvements and economies.
Some questions that every Brother should ask about his own Masonic Meeting Place:
- What is the legal status of the premises? Who owns and can sell the building?
- What is the market value of the building?
- What is the immediate financial position of the building?
- What are the 3 year/5 year/10 year financial projections?
- What is the strategy to improve facilities?
- How is my voice heard regarding my views and ideas on the building?
I am pleased to learn that the Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works and his Team has received completed copies of the Masonic Meeting Places survey from 25 of our meeting places. On the other hand, I am perplexed by the fact that questionnaires have yet to be returned by 29 of our meeting places despite the form having been distributed to all Masonic Halls in January earlier this year.
I urge those Masonic Hall management teams which have not returned their completed survey to do so as soon as possible to avoid the necessity of further enquiries by the Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works. I know W Bro. Martyn and his Team are willing to meet Hall management and to assist with the completion of the surveys if necessary.
Please do not hesitate to contact him at darcyhoward@hotmail.com or by phone on 07778 230851
Full Team Visit of the 2018/19 Acting Officers
All of the Team are very much looking forward to our first outing of the year:
Boothfrerry Lodge No: 7637 at Goole where we will be treated to a Third Degree Ceremony.
Provincial Office
A reminder that the Provincial Office is open: Monday to Friday 10.00am to 3.00pm.
As I am passionately committed to ensuring that we have the most competent colleagues supporting this Province, the Office will be closed on the morning of Thursday 26th July and the afternoon of 31st July and 7th, 14th and 21st of August for staff training
Heads of Other Orders Meeting - “Our Extended Family of Freemasonry”
Our Annual Meeting was held at Morley where we discussed matters of mutual interest and ways in which can work together, especially in growing our respective memberships.
This is always a most convivial and worthwhile gathering. We all appear to share similar challenges and are happy to share ideas and initiatives.
It was a delight to learn that the “2018 Northern Masonic Variety Show” held at Bradford Grammar School and organised by the Order of Mark Master Masons was a great success and enjoyed by all. (I agree!). The “2020 Northern Masonic Variety Show” will be in support of the Provincial Grand Master’s Fund.
The Great Yorkshire Show
The sun shone, and the crowds came! Indeed they did! Once again a magnificent opportunity was seized to engage with the general public. For the first time, The Order of Women Freemasons joined us on the Stand, and their presence was warmly received. There is nothing new about such joint representations at events, e.g. it would not be possible to participate in a Fresher’s Week event at any University as a single-sex Organisation.
This fact is particularly relevant to the Universities Scheme Lodges. I can state without any hesitation that there is absolutely no intention for our respective Orders to become any closer as we both enjoy and indeed celebrate the fact that we are individually separate and distinct.
My sincere thanks to our “GYS Team” for their hard work in making this event happen.
And finally.....
A Request from Our Brethren “Over the Water” in Madeira
Being a new Lodge, they are short of a few items of equipment and need two Working tools:
1st Degree – Chisel
2nd Degree – Plumb-rule (Wooden)
Can anyone assist, please? Do please drop me a line.
Fraternal Regards and, as always, my very best wishes to All,
David
