The United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales with the objective ‘To establish and/or enhance arrangements and opportunities for undergraduates and other university members to enjoy Freemasonry’, introduced the Universities Scheme in 2005.
The Scheme has the full support of The Grand Master, HRH the Duke of Kent, who states “A real benefit the Scheme confers is having young, intelligent men joining us who will, we hope, contribute greatly to the future of the Craft, as potential leaders and sources of inspiration.”
The Assistant Grand Master, Sir David Wooton says, "It is a great privilege to be President of the Universities Scheme. I am delighted by the success we have achieved in recent years, and I am excited by the opportunities that are now opening up across England and Wales as a result." He explains “We know from the long-established Universities Scheme lodges that students – whether undergraduates or postgraduates – enjoy Freemasonry to the full. Through the Universities Scheme, we hope that university members from all over the country will be able to gain the same inspiration, fulfilment and enjoyment.”
There are currently over 75 Lodges situated across the UK where towns and cities have universities, which have been authorised to participate in the Universities Scheme and with more to come. iesAll pursuing the same goals and objectives yet in their own individual way, with membership consisting of undergraduates, postgraduates, teaching staff and alumni alike with ages ranging from 18 to 80.
While the minimum age for joining Freemasonry usually is 21, in the case of university students this limit is reduced to 18. Also, reduced fees are charged to those aged under 25.
Throughout the Province of Yorkshire, West Riding we have a vibrant student membership and are keen to help our younger members develop their interest in Freemasonry and to derive the maximum enjoyment from being a Freemason and for that purpose there are four Lodges that are members of the Scheme - in Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds and Sheffield.
All of these four lodges welcome new members wishing to join and become a Freemason, who are undergraduates, postgraduates, alumni or staff from the local Universities. Student Freemasons from other Universities are also welcome as joining members if relocating to further their studies or work in our area after graduation.
